I find the kidney to be a fascinating organ. It does many things that are only now being understood. Some aspects of kidney science are still unexplored territory, and that was one reason I chose to become a nephrologist. Another reason is that as a nephrologist, I really get to know my patients well and see my dialysis and chronic kidney disease patients often. Nephrologists frequently have the opportunity to form therapeutic bonds with their patients that can last for years. The nephrologists I met when I was training always seemed to be very patient, caring and thoughtful physicians, and that is what I strive to be. My goal as a physician has always been to help take care of people affected by kidney disease, which is a growing problem in the United States that often strikes persons who are elderly and historically underserved. I came to HealthPartners after completing a fellowship in nephrology in Madison, Wisconsin, and practicing in Cincinnati, Ohio, for eight years. I was very excited to join HealthPartners and return to this region with my wife and our two daughters. My wife, who is a nurse, was born and raised in the Twin Cities and she is very happy to be back in her home town. During my free time, I enjoy playing guitar and writing songs. My family and I enjoy skiing, and we have taken ski trip vacations to Colorado and Wyoming. I also enjoy amateur astronomy and DIY projects around the house. As I was growing up, the medical profession was always very highly regarded in my family for doing good and helping people. That is what first interested me in becoming a doctor. The field of nephrology appeals to me because I love the challenges and complexities of the specialty. Nephrology is one of the more diverse specialties and I enjoy both the outpatient clinic and hospital aspects of it, as well as seeing dialysis patients and post-transplant patients. Many years ago, before practicing in the United States, I practiced as a nephrologist in India. That experience gave me to the opportunity to see how the specialty was practiced in a resource-poor environment, and it gave me a broad perspective on how the specialty is practiced in different environments. I am married and have two boys. In my free time, I enjoy travel and watching movies - two things the whole family enjoys. I am a member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Nephrologist?
Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
