When I started medical school, I didn't realize that otolaryngology – head and neck surgery was a medical specialty! I feel quite fortunate to have discovered it during medical school, quickly realizing that the scope of practice of otolaryngology fit my personality and interests well. I completed my residency in otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota in 2004 and never looked back. I enjoy treating the wide array of ear, nose and throat medical issues and I value every patient visit. Your visit will seem relaxed, but be assured that I am taking what you say quite seriously. While I like all areas within my specialty, I particularly enjoy treating children and performing salivary gland, thyroid and parathyroid surgery. As an assistant professor in otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota, I take a great amount of pride in teaching our medical students and residents into becoming the next generation of doctors. As department head for HealthPartners Medical Group, we have grown into a tremendous group that can treat most every aspect of our specialty. Dr. Schmidt is highly rated in 5 conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Infant Hearing Loss, DFNB1, Jones Syndrome, and Nonsyndromic Hearing Loss. As an otologist, I specialize in the treatment of chronic ear disease, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, ossicular chain reconstruction, cochlear implants and implantable hearing devices. I also treat sudden hearing loss, Meniere's disease and other forms of vertigo. I treat patient of all ages, children and adults. The otologic condition in which I have the broadest surgical expertise is cholesteatoma, an aggressive epithelial cyst that can grow in the ear and if untreated, it can cause permanent hearing loss and other serious complications. I treat congenital and acquired cholesteatoma in children and adults. I perform minimally invasive endoscopic ear surgery in appropriate patients with chronic middle ear disease and cholesteatoma. With this new, advanced endoscopic technique, I can avoid an incision behind the ear, have better visualization and repair the ear drum, and remove infection and cholesteatoma with a minimally invasive transcanal approach resulting into less post-operative pain and a quicker recovery. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota, I enjoy teaching resident physicians and medical students. Teaching and keeping up with the latest advances in technology are very important parts of my professional career. I have presented my research work and clinical results on outcomes of endoscopic ear surgery nationally at our Annual Academy Meetings in Otolaryngology and internationally in France, Italy, Scotland and Japan. Being an otolaryngologist allows me to work with people at every stage of their life. From young children to senior citizens, every patient is unique and equally important. I view patient care as a privilege and strive to treat all patients the same way I would expect for myself or my family. While I am comfortable working with patients with a wide variety of concerns, my main interest includes diseases of the paranasal sinuses and the throat. When not working, I enjoy spending time outside with my wife and dog, Buddy. My favorite activities include fishing, hiking, canoeing and golf. I also spend time cooking, rooting for the Minnesota Twins and reading. Dr. Janus is highly rated in 6 conditions, according to our data. My practice is a blend of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and general otolaryngology. I have a particular interest in head and neck reconstruction following major cancer surgery or trauma. In these cases, I use local, regional or microvascular free tissue transfer procedures to return lost form and function. I am also interested in functional and aesthetic nasal surgery. I became interested in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery during my medical school years at Northwestern University in Chicago. I then moved to the Twin Cities, completing my general surgical internship as well as my otolaryngology residency here at the University of Minnesota in 1997. For 12 years, I was in practice as a general otolaryngologist in the greater Seattle area. During that time, I gained invaluable experience in this field, treating patients in all aspects of general otolaryngology, including otology (hearing diseases and corrective surgery), head and neck masses (both benign and cancerous growths), as well as nasal and sinus diseases. I enjoy seeing both adult and pediatric patients. I am excited to come back to the Twin Cities and join the Department of Otolaryngology here at HealthPartners. The ability to work alongside physicians I trained with many years ago, as well as being actively involved in teaching the medical students and otolaryngology residents, is very attractive. My wife is equally excited to return to her native state of Minnesota, having been born in St. Paul. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, three children and our dog. His clinical expertise encompasses Perichondritis, Low Nasal Bridge, Nasal Septal Hematoma, and Nasal Polyps. Dr. Chang is board certified in American Board Of Otolaryngology - Head And Neck Surgery. As a craniofacial skull base surgeon, I care for patients with cleft lip and palate, craniofacial deformities, as well as patients with skull-based tumors. Often our work is collaborative with other disciplines to include neurosurgery and oral maxillofacial surgery. My academic appointment at the University of Minnesota allows me to enjoy my additional passion for teaching and mentoring our residents and medical students. I routinely travel on humanitarian missions to the Far East and Central and South America to perform reconstructive procedures. Time away from medicine is spent with my family. I recently retired from the Minnesota National Guard, where I was able to care for the brave men and women who protect and serve our nation. My passion for service now extends to board positions on the Red Cross, Military STEM StarBase of Minnesota, KMOJ Radio, and the Minnesota Military Family Foundation. Otolaryngology has been my top interest since I was a young child, due to my personal experience as a patient with ear, nose and throat (ENT) related congenital anomalies. I have previously practiced otolaryngology within a private practice, where I saw patients in both a hospital and clinical setting, as well as acted as a first assistant in head & neck surgery. My current practice involves seeing patients in a clinical setting. I enjoy seeing general ENT related conditions but have special interest in seeing patients with ear disorders and head and neck cancer. I also enjoy partnering with my patients to improve their health and quality of life. I take pride in developing strong relationships with my patients built on trust and respect, while providing them with the best quality of care possible. Originally from Massapequa, NY, I now live in St. Croix County, WI. I love being close to the St. Croix River and enjoying the beautiful scenery, as well as any river related activity. When I am not practicing otolaryngology, I enjoy spending time with my husband, son, other family members and friends, as well as enjoying the great outdoors! Professional Credentials: National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants; September 2015 Professional Association Memberships: * Society of Physician Assistants in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery * American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery * American Academy of Physician Assistants * Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants. • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a ENT near maplewood, MN?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank ENTs near maplewood, MN?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by ENTs near maplewood, MN?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a ENT in maplewood?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the ENT search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different ENT?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a ENT near maplewood, MN?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my ENT?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my ENT may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female ENTs near maplewood, MN?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the ENT search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a ENT that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the ENT search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
