Dr. Sanjaya K. Satapathy is the medical director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute, program director of Northwell's Transplant Hepatology Fellowship, and professor of medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.His path to medicine began in India, where he was inspired by his father an engineer with a passion for homeopathy to pursue a career in healthcare. He earned his medical degree from Veer Surendra Sai Medical College, followed by fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology in the early 2000s. During that time, he witnessed the profound need for liver transplantation in India, where access remained scarce. While presenting his research at a conference in the United States, Dr. Satapathy was drawn to the opportunities and possibilities for advancing transplantation in America. He decided to continue his career in the United States, completing additional residency and fellowship training before serving as a transplant hepatologist in Memphis. In 2019, he was recruited to Northwell. It was a dream to begin from zero and build a transplant program that could be a model not just for the area or the state, but for the country, says Dr. Satapathy. Within only a few years, we've been able to achieve that goal, because Northwell has all the elements and resources to be one of the best programs in the nation. The expertise we have is unparalleled, with a collaborative team that encompasses all levels of care. The program was founded just in time for a huge surge in demand for liver transplants in the area, he adds. Liver disease and other liver issues are on the rise, making the need for an extensive program crucial for those in the New York region. Part of the program's strength is innovation. For example, Northwell is utilizing an approach that allows donated organs to be safely preserved for a longer period of time, which means needed organs can travel longer distances even from as far away as Hawaii. Northwell is also running several clinical trials on transplant medications and operates a robust transplant hepatology fellowship program to train the next generation of doctors a program Dr. Satapathy launched.I'm passionate about this work, and particularly about my patients, he says. I see every patient as my family, and my focus is on what I can do next to help them. Dr. Satapathy is highly rated in 26 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis, Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Hepatitis, Liver Transplant, and Endoscopy.

James Park, MD, is the co-director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute, and the chief of hepatology at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital. He joined Northwell after 14 years at NYU Langone Health, where he was the director of transplant hepatology. During his internal medicine residency at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Dr. Park developed a keen interest in hepatology, particularly within Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. I noticed a disproportionate number of Asians with late-stage liver diseases and liver cancer. They were often diagnosed late, some too late, he says. This realization led him to his calling. In 2022, Dr. Park established the Asian Liver Health Program at Northwell Health. Through outreach with local cultural organizations, free education and screenings, he works to dismantle the barriers to earlier diagnoses and treatment of liver cancer, cirrhosis and hepatitis B among the diverse and rapidly growing AAPI population. At the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, care is coordinated with multilingual and multidisciplinary specialists. Having everyone in the same location streamlines the process for patients and maximizes communication between doctors. At the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation, we provide 360-degree care for each patient to ensure no stone is unturned in their immediate and ongoing treatment. Dr. Park also launched an Advanced Care Provider (ACP) fellowship in transplant hepatology to train the next generation of nurse practitioners and physician assistants. He is a strong believer in using ACPs to help address the shortage of providers in the field of hepatology. Educating ACPs and helping patients are privileges for which I am very grateful. Dr. Park is highly rated in 19 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Hepatitis, Visceromegaly, Cirrhosis, and Jaundice.

An internationally known leader in hematology, A. Samer Al-Homsi, MD, MBA, is system chief of blood and marrow transplant and cellular therapy at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, where he also serves as director of faculty and academic affairs in medical oncology. In his position, Dr. Al-Homsi treats patients in need of blood and marrow transplantation for blood cancers and other blood conditions. Dr. Al-Homsi attended medical school at Damascus University Faculty of Medicine, did his residency at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Illinois, and completed a fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, MA. He also received training and practiced in France. He came to Northwell from the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Health, where he was executive director of transplantation and cellular therapy. His research efforts throughout his career have focused on innovations that lead to better patient care in blood and marrow transplantation. The poet Kahlil Gibran wrote that work is love made visible, and I believe medicine is love made visible, says Dr. Al-Homsi. Every patient has unique needs, based not just on their specific condition, but also on their cultural background, family situation, and the impact of their disease. We're fortunate at Northwell to have care delivered by a large team that's there to address all those aspects.Dr. Al-Homsi is looking forward to advancing more clinical research at Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. That will likely facilitate the development of more therapies that can treat patients, he says, and in a way that's safer and more effective.Dr. Al-Homsi doesn't just focus on the physical effects of conditions like leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma with decades of patient care, he also knows the tremendous value of a deeper conversation about how cancer is affecting patients mental health and everyday function. His priority is to learn about the patient first and the disease second. That perspective on patient advocacy and approaching each interaction with compassion and love is the same now as it was when he first entered medical school, he recalls. I wanted my life to matter, and to make a difference, he says. I'm not trying to change the world, but I can change patients' lives. I can change their world, and that's incredibly rewarding and meaningful. Dr. Al is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Smoldering Multiple Myeloma, T-Cell Lymphoma, Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma, and Bone Marrow Transplant.

When should I see a Transplant Surgeon near Manhasset, NY?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Transplant Surgeon near Manhasset, NY?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Transplant Surgeons near Manhasset, NY?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Transplant Surgeons near Manhasset, NY?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Transplant Surgeon in Manhasset?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Transplant Surgeon search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Transplant Surgeon?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Transplant Surgeon near Manhasset, NY?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Transplant Surgeon?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Transplant Surgeon may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Transplant Surgeons near Manhasset, NY?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Transplant Surgeon search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Transplant Surgeon that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Transplant Surgeon search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
