Dr. H J. Pfaeffle
Overview
H. James Pfaeffle, MD, PhD, is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon with Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers and a member of its hand and upper extremity team. He studied mechanical engineering prior to entering medical school, and earned his medical degree and doctorate in bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Pfaeffle completed his internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at UPMC. He completed a hand surgery fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he refined his skills in hand and upper extremity surgery and microsurgery. Dr. Pfaeffle is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and Allegheny County Medical Society. In addition to performing arthroscopic hand, wrist and elbow surgery, Dr. Pfaeffle treats congenital hand conditions, fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries, and arthritis. Robert Kaufmann, MD, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Mechanical Engineering. After working as a design engineer for two years, he attended Temple University School of Medicine and completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Temple University Hospital. He received specialized training in elbow and upper extremity surgery at the Philadelphia Hand Center at Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Kaufmann has published more than 30 articles, book chapters, and textbooks. He regularly presents his clinical and research findings at national meetings. Dr. Kaufmann is the primary upper extremity surgeon for the University of Pittsburgh and the Duquesne University athletic programs. He is also part of the medical team that treats the Pittsburgh Penguins. He specializes in the care of athletes and active adults, and has extensive experience with arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the elbow, wrist, and hand.
