I have been a faculty member at Duke for 30 years, specializing in the care of patients with epilepsy or sleep disorders. I have also recently gained a personal perspective, having been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, and becoming a dedicated CPAP user myself. I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do. Because of my family experiences I was drawn into the field of medicine early in my life. One of my close family members suffered from epilepsy since she was very young. I witnessed the adverse effect of epilepsy on socio-economic, education and quality of life of not just the patient, but the entire family. I learned that a doctor’s job is not only to prescribe medication but also provide education, counseling, and support when dealing with diseases like epilepsy. My two young children keep my wife and I active and on our toes. We take them hiking, camping, swimming, and any other outdoor activities possibly available that keeps them busy and promises a full night’s sleep. I enjoy woodworking and wood carving in my free time and enjoy seeing raw wood transformed into a useful daily accessory or an artistic gift. During my neurology and neurophysiology training at Duke, I developed an abiding fondness for my colleagues and patients, so it was an easy decision to stay on as an attending physician. I have the privilege of working with patients in both the hospital and clinic. As a hospital neurologist, my interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of acute neurologic problems, such as seizures, head injuries, infections, and autoimmune conditions. My outpatient practice focuses on the treatment of epilepsy in patients with hard-to-control seizures. In both the hospital and clinic, I have the pleasure of working with the excellent medical students, residents, and fellows of Duke University Hospital, along with nationally and internationally recognized colleagues.
