Dr. Christopher Van Hofwegen

Thiran Udawatta, MD, is fellowship trained in foot and ankle surgery at the world-renowned Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. He joins Proliance Pacific Rim Orthopaedic Surgeons after his fellowship at Harborview and residency training in St. Louis. Dr. Udawatta has gained extensive training in simple and complex foot and ankle disorders. He specializes in advanced techniques for treating foot and ankle problems including arthroscopy, arthroplasty (total ankle replacement), deformity correction (flat feet and high arch feet), and fracture care among others. He also performs hip and knee replacements. Dr. Udawatta moves to Bellingham after growing up in the midwest. He comes to Bellingham with his wife, Janie, who grew up in the Seattle area and their rescue dog, Rose. In his free time, Dr. Udawatta enjoys road cycling, hiking, the outdoors, spending time with his family, making pizzas, and solving Rubik’s Cubes. Dr. Udawatta looks forward to helping Bellingham patients return to the activities they love. Eric Secrist, MD, was born and raised in Washington and spent a decade receiving his medical training on the east coast before returning home to begin his practice. This included training with the Rothman Institute and OrthoCarolina, two of the largest private practice orthopedic groups in the country. He also received fellowship training at the Carilion Clinic focusing on hip and knee replacements and revisions, with a particular focus on the anterior approach to the hip.His philosophy is focused on treating each patient as an individual and empowering them to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. He works closely with a large team to ensure that all nonoperative treatment is attempted before considering surgery. If patients elect to move forward with surgery, he works closely with primary care providers to evaluate the whole patient – not just their orthopedic condition – and optimize their physical and mental health before surgery. During surgery, he employs a multimodal approach incorporating pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to pain management to help patients take as few opioids as possible and speed their road to recovery. The best part of his job is when people come back to his clinic with photos of themselves enjoying an activity they couldn’t do before their surgery. If you do – be prepared for him to ask for copies!Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife Taylre who is a physical therapist at Proliance Skagit Northwest Physical Therapy, as well as their two children. He also enjoys running, skiing, enjoying the many outdoor activities Washington offers, and following PNW sports teams, particularly the University of Washington.
