Overview

"Dr. Liza Johannesson, M.D., Ph.D., is a graduate of the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. She completed training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden, followed by training in gynecologic oncology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia. She presented her PhD thesis about Uterus Transplantation in primates in 2012 and was a pivotal part of the world pioneering first clinical human trial of Uterus Transplantation in Sweden that resulted in the first birth after Uterus Transplantation in the world. She was recruited by Baylor University Medical Center in 2017 to build up a new Uterus Transplant Program. The program resulted in the first birth after Uterus Transplant in the US in 2017 and is today the largest and most successful Uterus Transplant program in the world. Dr. Johannesson serves as the Medical Director of Uterus Transplantation and is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Texas A&M College of Medicine at Texas A&M Health Science Center, Dallas. Dr. Johannesson is actively involved in the US Uterus Transplant Consortium (USUTC), the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), the Vascular Composite Allograft Committee, in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the Vascular Composite Allograft Committee and of the genitourinary workgroup, in the American Society of Reconstructive Transplantation (ASRT), and in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). She is a Founding Member of both the International Society of Uterus Transplantation (ISUTX) and the USUTC. Dr. Johannesson is an active researcher with more than 100 publications and is invited to lecture worldwide on current issues in the field of Uterus Transplantation. Dr.  Johannesson was recently featured in D Magazine's ""The Best Doctors 2025, The Women's Health Issue."" Read the article ""Uterus Transplants Offer a New Path to Motherhood"" as she discusses their groundbreaking team. Baylor Scott & White’s program was the first in the United States to have a live birth after a uterine transplant, and it was the first in the world to perform a uterus transplant outside of a clinical trial. As of August 2024, Baylor has performed 33 uterus transplant surgeries, resulting in 22 live births. To date, they have received interest from donors in 41 states, which is about triple the 10 to 15 cases per year that they can complete.".
