I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do. When people think about sleep disorders, they usually report getting too much or not enough sleep. That is the starting point where we work together to get to the root cause. What I have discovered in treating patients is that sleep medicine is multifactorial - you address attitudes around sleep, mental health, wellness, as well as consider other medical problems. Sleep apnea is one of the better-known sleep disorders, and the good news is that we have better technology today to treat it. It is very gratifying when patients come back and tell me how much their quality of life has improved! When I talk to patients, other less recognized sleep disorders can also be discovered and treated, such as restless leg syndrome, abnormal sleep behaviors, and narcolepsy. It is not uncommon for more than one sleep disorder to be present. When I see a patient, my aim is to to get a complete picture about their sleep so success in treatment is achieved. I am a pulmonologist, intensivist, and sleep medicine specialist, with a particular interest in disorders that impact breathing during sleep, such as sleep apnea and hypoventilation. I also evaluate patients with various pulmonary and sleep conditions. My approach consists of listening carefully to patients and understanding what matters to them. We then come up with an individualized treatment plan together after reviewing all the options. Sleep apnea and other related breathing disorders differ with each individual and so does the response to treatment. I believe in working with patients to help make certain therapies, such as PAP devices, more tolerable and effective, while also considering other options. My goal is to help patients achieve good sleep so they can lead a healthier life. It is very gratifying to me when patients who start treatment report experiencing good sleep for the first time in a while. During my free time, I enjoy watching and practicing sports, traveling, and spending time with my family. I am passionate about sleep and helping patients achieve good sleep so they can be healthier and feel better during the day. I have particular interests in treating patients with obstructive and central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and idiopathic hypersomnia. For patients with sleep apnea who haven't done well with treatment in the past, I can often help make positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy more tolerable and effective. My approach to patients is to spend time gathering information from patients and their families. Families can provide very helpful information about patients' sleep that patients might not be aware of themselves. I then work with patients to develop a treatment that is mutually agreeable, as I think it's important for patients to understand and agree with their treatment plans. Whenever possible, I avoid using medications as most sleep problems can be improved without them. While I was practicing primary care for 9 years I was repeatedly exposed to sleep disorders that were affecting the disease processes I was managing. From this my interest grew in learning about these conditions as they played a major role in improving the patient's overall health. I then decided to pursue sub specialty training in Sleep Medicine. I am now excited to provide comprehensive care for all sleep disorders including sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, parasomnias including REM behavior disorder, to name a few. I love educating patients on their disease and bringing them into the decision making process for a collaborative approach. What is the definition of Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a problem in which your breathing pauses during sleep. This occurs because of narrowed or blocked airways.

What type of doctor treats sleep apnea?

    • Neurologists are brain doctors who treat sleep apnea if it’s related to neurological problems, like central sleep apnea, when the brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
    • Ear, nose, and throat specialists (ENTs) – also called otolaryngologists – are involved if sleep apnea is related to constricted airway issues like enlarged tonsils, nasal congestion, or a deviated septum.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

Symptoms of sleep apnea may vary from person to person. They can include:

    • Loud snoring
    • Feeling tired when waking up (even after a full night’s sleep)
    • Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat
    • Morning headaches
    • Daytime drowsiness
    • Trouble focusing
    • Mood changes, such as depression and irritability

    How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute states that the first step in diagnosing sleep apnea is to participate in a sleep study. A polysomnogram is an overnight sleep study that takes place in a medical clinic called a sleep lab. This study involves being hooked up to sensors that monitor heart rate, breathing, blood oxygen levels, and brain waves.

A home sleep study takes place at home with no healthcare professionals present. This study is less detailed because it does not include brain wave monitoring. If results of a home sleep study are inconclusive (not clear), the doctor may recommend a polysomnogram.

    How is sleep apnea treated?

A common treatment is to use a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This breathing device is worn overnight to deliver continuous air through the mouth and/or nose while asleep. Another option is to wear a dental device that fits over the teeth like a retainer and forces the jaw in a forward position to help keep the airway open during sleep. Other approaches include lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or avoiding alcohol.

What happens if sleep apnea is left untreated?

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, if left untreated for too long, sleep apnea can lead to serious health risks, including high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, diabetes, and major depression. It can also cause excessive daytime sleepyness (feeling very sleepy during the day), which could lead to accidents.

What’s the life expectancy of someone with sleep apnea?

There is no specific life expectancy associated with sleep apnea, and researchers have not determined whether sleep apnea causes premature death.

According to a 2008 study from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, however, people with severe or untreated sleep apnea have a higher risk of death. Many of the participants in the study also had other conditions associated with lower life expectancy, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It is unclear what role sleep apnea played in their life expectancy versus those other conditions.

When should I see an Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Obstructive Sleep Apnea doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
