Overview
Dr. Berhanu was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She attended Stanford University where she earned a B.A. degree in human biology. She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. She completed her fellowship in rheumatology at New York University’s Langone Medical Center where she served as chief fellow in her final year. Following her fellowship, Dr. Berhanu joined the medical faculty at George Washington University as Assistant Professor of Rheumatology where she had an active clinical practice and trained new physicians.
Dr. Berhanu has a clinical interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound for which she received specialized training from USSONAR and obtained RhMSUS certification from the American College of Rheumatology. She applies her expertise with musculoskeletal ultrasound to her clinical interest in gout and has authored or co-authored several articles on the therapeutic management of gout. In addition to her research interests, Dr. Berhanu has long been dedicated to community service, both locally and abroad. She served as the 2018 Arthritis Foundation “Walk to Cure Arthritis” Medical Honoree and is particularly proud to have worked with the rheumatology program at the teaching hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dr. Kaiser completed her Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine and served as Chief Resident at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY. She then received a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley and then completed her Rheumatology Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Prior to joining Arthritis and Rheumatism Associates, Dr. Kaiser was on the faculty for several years as an Asst. Professor in the Division of Rheumatology at UCSF. In that position, she taught and mentored medical students, residents, and Rheumatology fellows in the classroom, on the inpatient Rheumatology consult service, and in the Lupus clinic. Dr. Kaiser has received numerous honors and awards including the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Distinguished Fellow Award. She has received grants from the Arthritis Foundation, ACR, and UCSF in support of her research examining genetic risk factors for thrombosis in patients with lupus. Dr. Kaiser has experience in all areas of rheumatology and has a special interest in lupus and osteoporosis. Afterwards she graduated from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and then completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Rheumatology Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC.Dr. Thomas has received multiple scholarships and awards throughout her academic and medical careers, was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Society in November 2008, and was awarded the William P. Argy Teaching Resident Award in 2011. Dr. Thomas has been named a “Top Doctor” by Washingtonian Magazine for multiple consecutive years, as well as by Arlington Magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine. She has co-authored several articles and abstracts, presented research on Systemic Sclerosis at the American College of Rheumatology national meeting in Chicago in November 2011, and is the first author of a manuscript on tuberculous arthritis that has recently been accepted for publication.Dr. Thomas is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and is a member of the American College of Rheumatology. Her areas of interest include systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
