I’ve been practicing medicine for almost 30 years, and I can’t imagine doing anything else. My favorite thing about being a pediatrician is becoming part of the family. Seeing a child from the first days of life all the way through to adolescence is truly amazing. I’m very humbled and proud to be voted Osceola County’s best pediatrician, but what’s truly rewarding is having parents who were my patients as children, bringing their own children in to see me. In the Philippines, where I was born and raised, I was inspired by my neighbor who was a physician. For years I watched as he helped people — especially sick children — get well and grow up. I thought it was incredible that someone could help heal and make such a difference in a person's life. I knew early on this was what I wanted to do. My passion is helping children grow into strong, confident adults. As a doctor I can influence a child’s life and I take that to heart. When I was young, my doctor was my friend and that’s my goal with my patients and families. I enjoy celebrating successes and helping my patients through struggles by providing healing and advice in times of sickness and in health. I regularly participate in medical missions in the Philippines, and I’m grateful to be able to help children who are sick get back to just being kids. I also treat every child as my own and will do whatever it takes to ensure that all of my “children” are healthy and strong. I was the youngest in a family of five and the only girl. Growing up in Jamaica, I was into sports, climbing trees and practicing to be a doctor. I used to compound flowers and herbals to make “medicine.” I’d keep it into a little bottle and administer it with a spoon to treat my dogs if they looked poorly. I have known since I was 3 years old that I wanted to care for children. I love that they’re so honest. When they feel better, you know it. Their perspective on life is enviable. Children really live each moment that they’re alive. They inspire me. I am passionate about searching for better ways to treat children with chronic diseases that affect them every day and find cures. This includes nonmalignant conditions like sickle cell disease that impact quality of life and longevity. I try to make a difference by being really parent-accessible and education-friendly. When parents and patients understand what I understand, they can fully cooperate in making treatment successful.I know that my patients need me to be as authentic as possible. Kids can pick out an adult who’s not being genuine with them. So I try always to put myself in their position, understand where they’re coming from and move from there to where we want to go. What is the definition of Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle cell anemia (HbSS) is a genetic blood disorder that is the most common, severe type of sickle cell disease, in which the red blood cells, instead of being flexible and round, are rigid, sticky, and shaped like sickles or crescent moons (C-shaped). This rigidity and stickiness of red blood cells makes the hemoglobin in the cells carry less oxygen and get stuck in small blood vessels, while slowing or blocking blood and oxygen to the body tissues. Sickle cells additionally die early, causing a chronic shortage of red blood cells. When sickle cells get stuck in small blood vessels, they can cause pain, infection, acute chest syndrome, and stroke. In the United States, sickle cell anemia occurs most frequently in African Americans and Hispanic Americans.

When should I see a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Sickle Cell Disease doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Sickle Cell Disease doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Sickle Cell Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Sickle Cell Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Sickle Cell Disease doctor near Kissimmee, FL?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Sickle Cell Disease doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Sickle Cell Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Sickle Cell Disease doctors near Kissimmee, FL?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Sickle Cell Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Sickle Cell Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Sickle Cell Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
