For his research on thumb arthritis, he was awarded first place in an orthopedic research and education foundation conference. He then pursued his orthopedic residency training at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he published several articles in the Journal of Hand Surgery, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and other peer reviewed journals. Dr. Ugwonali was also recognized for obtaining the department's highest orthopedic in-training examination scores for two years in a row. He completed subspecialty fellowship training in hand, shoulder, elbow, and microvascular surgery at Harvard School of Medicine's Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston. At Harvard, Dr. Ugwonali served as an attending staff member at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Veterans Affairs Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital. He is credentialed with Emory University School of Medicine as an assistant clinical professor of orthopedics. He is currently on staff at Northside Hospital, Piedmont Hospital, and Children's Hospital in Atlanta. Dr. Ugwonali speaks English and Igbo.
