I have chosen to direct my efforts as a physician toward improving the quality of life for women who are dealing with pelvic floor disorders. I focus on listening to a patient's description of her symptoms and their impact on her, her goals for treatment, and – by using evidence-based techniques– I evaluate her condition. Treatment options might vary from patient to patient; the best way to proceed is often an individualized decision. I am pleased to have been a member of the Duke faculty since 1996. I am in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a sub-specialist in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. I take care of women with pelvic floor disorders. That includes women who suffer from disorders related to childbirth and disorders resulting from aging of the pelvic floor including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and bowel leakage. My father was an academic obstetrician and gynecologist and through my life that served as a role model for me. As I got older I became more exposed to others in the field of OBGYN and enjoyed being around them. I was fascinated by the conditions that span from childbirth to the end of a woman's life. I enjoy helping treat conditions that may be embarrassing and not typically discussed at the dinner table. Women tend to defer their own care in favor of their family members while suffering from these conditions of quality of life despite adequate treatment options. I decided to become an obstetrician/gynecologist because I loved delivering babies, however, after seeing how treatment of pelvic floor disorders changed women’s lives I decided to specialize in urogynecology. I have been fortunate to be involved in research that has made a real difference in the lives of my patients. As part of my commitment to share the knowledge gained with other doctors, I have published several papers in national medical journals. As president of the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) in 2013, I participated in the development of many national programs to improve the lives of women with bladder leakage and vaginal prolapse. My main clinical interest includes performing robotic sacrocolpopexy, a highly successful, minimally invasive treatment for patients with advanced pelvic organ prolapse. I also offer Botox injections for overactive bladder, vaginal prolapse surgeries (with and without mesh) and care for patients with uterine fibroids, mesh complications and vaginal fistulas.
