Overview
Dr. Basem Hamid earned his medical degree at the Damascus University School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Mount Sinai University in New York City; a residency in internal medicine and neurology at West Virginia University, where he was chief resident in neurology; and a fellowship in pain medicine at The University of Iowa. Board certified in pain medicine and neurology, Dr. Hamid has been in practice since 1995. He speaks French and Arabic. He treats Alzheimer's, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), epilepsy, migraine disorder, headache, complex regional pain syndromes and causalgia. He has served as an assistant professor and the director of the pain fellowship program at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and assistant professor of neurology and anesthesiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He has been a principle investigator in numerous studies related to pain care, particularly management of neuropathic and cancer pain and has published journal articles related to pain, and authored several book chapters on pain-related topics. Dr. Hamid has been honored with multiple Patients’ Choice and Compassionate Doctor awards and was named one of Houston’s Top Doctors in 2014. He is a member of the Physicians’ Council for Responsible Reform. Dr. Hamid is married and the father of four daughters. Outside of his practice, he is active in the community and enjoys spending time with his family.
