Cheryl A. Hillery, MD, is clinical director of Hematology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a professor of Pediatrics within the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Xavier completed a master’s degree in clinical research at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.He has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in the field of pediatric hemostasis and is currently awarded with a research grant to study inflammation in Hemophilia. Dr. Xavier also sits in the Newborn Screening and Follow-up Technical Advisory Board for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.Dr. Xavier also practices at the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania, a state and federally-funded 501(c)3 charitable organization that provides comprehensive medical care to the residents of Western Pennsylvania with hemophilia and other bleeding and clotting disorders. As part of that mission, Dr. Cooper and Dr. Tahniat Syed of Adolescent Medicine co-lead a dedicated clinic for young women with menstrual disorders, known as the CHAMP (Comprehensive Hematologic Assessment of Adolescents with Menstrual Problems) Clinic. In addition to coagulation disorders, Dr. Cooper also cares for children with a variety of oncologic and other hematologic problems.Dr. Cooper’s research interests include thrombosis rates in adolescents and young adults versus younger children with cancer and the cost effectiveness of laboratory analysis of clotting disorders in children.
