Overview
John C. Ofenloch, MD received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and attended the University of Illinois at Chicago where he was awarded his medical degree. Dr. Ofenloch moved to Atlanta, Georgia to complete his internship and general surgery residency at Emory University. During his residency, Dr. Ofenloch also completed a Vascular Surgery Research Fellowship. He remained at Emory University to complete his cardiothoracic (heart) surgery residency. Dr. Ofenloch moved to Clearwater in 2002 to join the Morton Plant Hospital cardiac surgical program and quickly became a leader in surgical volume as well as critical care. Dr. Ofenloch is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. As an innovative heart surgeon dedicated to high quality care for his patients, Dr. Ofenloch pioneered bringing the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure to the Tampa Bay area with a talented multidisciplinary team of physicians at Morton Plant Hospital. Dr. Ofenloch is the chief of the department of cardiothoracic surgery and is the medical director for both the Morgan Heart Hospital Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiovascular Operating Room. He is a co-chair of BayCare’s Adult Cardiac Surgery and Structural Heart Committee. He is a councilor in the Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. His areas of expertise focus on valvular heart surgery including mitral and aortic valve procedures as well as aortic root and aneurysm surgery, coronary bypass surgery, and the surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). He has performed over 1200 valve surgeries in the past 10 years.Dr. Ofenloch is particularly committed to the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation with the Maze procedure. Dr. Ofenloch participates in several national research trials investigating transcatheter mitral and aortic valve techniques as well as closure of the left atrial appendage.
