Overview
Katie Fluharty MHS, PA-C, always knew she wanted to work in healthcare. “My high school had an allied health program, where I shadowed medical professionals in the local hospital,” she recalls. “That’s where I first encountered physician assistants and it solidified my path.” Katie is board-certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Her higher education studies began at Widener University, Chester, Pa., where she graduated magna cum laude. She earned her master’s and PA certification at Drexel University, Philadelphia. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest physician assistants programs with a less than five percent acceptance rate. She provides a wide variety of medical services, including preventive care, diagnosing and treating illness and injury, vaccines, lab testing, medication management and physicals. She also helps her patients connect with specialists and other health professionals as needed. “It’s whole-body care and very hands-on,” Katie says. As a student, she did preceptor training with Dr. Salvatore Pepe at AtlantiCare Urgent Care in Galloway and with Dr. William Dickerman in Norristown, Pa. Before joining AtlantiCare, she gained PA experience in family medicine and urgent care services in Brigantine and by caring for enlisted recruits and active duty personnel at the US Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. “In primary care, we see patients over the long term and do lots of follow-up. We ensure they get appropriate treatment and the right medications, juggling insurance to get them the best possible care. My goal is for every patient to have a good experience, the first time and every time,” she says. A native of Chester County, Pa., Katie lives at the southern New Jersey shore with her husband and their dog, Kashi. She is happy to be working close to home and helping the local community stay healthy. In their free time, they enjoy the beach, boating and barbecuing for family and friends.
