Dr. Robert D. Travis

Dr. Asheesh Bedi is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery specializing in sports medicine, including arthroscopic and open surgery for athletic injuries of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. He is the Executive Director and Chief of Sports Medicine at Michigan Medicine, and the head orthopaedic team physician for U-M Athletics. He is also a team physician for Chicago Bears, medical director for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), and a consultant for the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA).Dr. Bedi completed his undergraduate training at Northwestern University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with AOA recognition and remained in Ann Arbor to pursue residency training in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Michigan. After completing his training, Dr. Bedi completed a two-year fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.He has also pursued additional dedicated training in arthroscopic hip surgery for young athletes. Dr. Bedi has authored over 350 articles, chapters, and peer-reviewed publications on shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip injuries in athletes. He has won numerous prestigious awards in the field, including the ASES Neer Award, AOSSM Cabaud and Excellence in Research Awards, and is a member of the Herodicus Society. Dr. Biermann chairs the Multidisciplinary Sarcoma Tumor Board, a collaborative cancer center group including medical and pediatric oncologists, pathologist, diagnostic radiologists, and radiation therapists. In addition to her regional responsibilities, Dr. Biermann has been active in national committee and administrative work. She chairs the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Bone Tumors Panel. She is past president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS). She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She sits on the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Grant Board. Her active research program has included more than 87 publications in the areas of musculoskeletal tumors and in the impact of the Internet on patient education. Dr. Biermann is the University of Michigan Medical Director for the Sarcoma Program and the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director. Michelle Caird, M.D. is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Michigan Medicine. She is a busy member of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics. She received an engineering degree followed by her medical degree at University of Michigan, where she earned Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She completed her internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at University of Michigan Health, and fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.Dr. Caird joined the faculty at University of Michigan Health at the completion of her fellowship. Clinically, she treats multiple orthopaedic conditions faced by children including fractures, spinal deformity, unequal or bowed legs, clubfeet, and complex hip problems in growing children. Her areas of special expertise include treating fractures and spinal deformity in children with osteogenesis imperfecta, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. In the laboratory she investigates bone healing in these diseases. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and in 2012 she was selected to represent POSNA in Northern Europe as one of the POSNA Traveling Fellows, where she studied and taught at major European centers. Dr. Caird is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.
