Dr. Julie Hoover-Fong is a Professor of Genetic Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Greenberg Center for Skeletal Dysplasias at Johns Hopkins University. As an active clinical researcher, Dr. Hoover-Fong is the Principal Investigator of multiple global clinical trials for achondroplasia, the first multi-center, investigator-initiated natural history study for achondroplasia, and multiple clinical studies for patients with orofacial clefting, hypophosphatasia and other conditions. She is also a co-investigator on the ELSI and Phenotype Review Committees for the Mendel Project, a whole exome sequencing venture to identify the genetic cause of Mendelian conditions. From an institutional service perspective, Dr. Hoover-Fong serves on the Johns Hopkins Associate Professor Promotions Committee and the Advisory Committee for the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation. She serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Little People of America, is a member of the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence at Johns Hopkins University and is a charter member of the International Skeletal Dysplasia Management Consortium, publishing best practice guidelines for patients with skeletal dysplasias. Michael Hsieh, MD, PhD, is a urologist at Children's National Hospital. Dr. Hsieh has experience in laparoscopic and robotic surgery for urologic conditions and specializes in bladder diseases affecting children and young adults. He is board-certified in urology and holds the certificate of added qualification in pediatric urology. Dr. Hsieh was recruited to Children’s National and the George Washington University to serve as Director of Transitional Urology. This joint venture is the East Coast's first clinical program dedicated to the care of adolescents and young adults with congenital urologic disorders. Many of these patients have chronic cystitis and are at increased risk of bladder cancer, diseases which dovetail with Dr. Hsieh’s research interests. Dr. Hsieh also is the Director of Research for the Division of Urology and the Associate Director for Science at the Sheik Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. He runs an NIH-funded bladder biology research group. Dr. Hsieh has been a Recognized Doctor on the Healthgrades Honor Roll and Best Doctors in America. He has been featured several times in the New York Times for his work in robotic surgery and bladder inflammation. He attended Stanford University and returned to the East Coast for medical school at Thomas Jefferson University. During medical school, Dr. Hsieh also obtained a PhD in immunology and afterwards began exploring what would eventually become his long-term interest – the role of bladder inflammation in urinary tract infections and development of bladder cancer. He completed his urology residency training at the University of California San Francisco and pediatric urology fellowship training at Texas Children’s Hospital. As a pediatric urology fellow, Dr. Hsieh began studying how the commensal microbiome (the collection of naturally occurring, non-pathogenic bacteria in and on our bodies) may prevent urinary tract infections. Following fellowship training, he was an Assistant Professor at Stanford University, where he founded an NIH-funded research group focused on bladder inflammation, urinary tract infections and bladder cancer.
