"Philosophy of care | I grew up in a small Pennsylvania coal region town where everyone knew each other. I also come from a big family. My mom is one of 10 siblings with 6 sisters, and my dad was one of 4 children. We grew up in a lovely house that my parents built. We didn't have a lot of money but my parents truly put their hearts into raising our family. They worked very hard and made sacrifices, so that they could provide for us. We always knew we were loved and cared for. How does this relate to being a physician? It means I've grown up seeing love and hard work. I care for my patients as I'd want my family members to be treated. I believe it's important to listen to your patients. I want to know who they are outside of lab studies and test results. I try to avoid asking general questions but instead I ask deeper questions to understand where my patients are coming from and what their lives are really like. I've also suffered loss in my life. I lost my dad when I was young and we lost our first baby at 14 weeks. I truly believe these two tragic events have made me a better doctor. I can relate. Patients and staff often comment to me that ,""Dr. Boyle, you're really just like us."" This is my goal: for people to feel comfortable coming to me about anything even if it's just for a hug and for someone to listen. I want my patients to know that they should never feel judged or scared. | Why I entered medicine | Coming from a very large family, I have seen our share of illness and disease. When I was young I thought I would become a teacher. But as I grew up I realized that I could do a great deal to help women in need by becoming a physician. | Personal interests | I love spending time with my family. Philosophy of care | My philosophy revolves around optimizing quality of life through minimally invasive options. Such advances give patients same-day options that allow them to return to their busy lives faster. I have advocated in many hospital systems for laparoscopy, robotics, minimally invasive procedures for incontinence and office-based procedures. Minimal pain, faster recovery and cutting-edge technology is the platform for all my patient care. D'nese M. Sokolowski, MD, FACOG, PC
Philosophy of care | Medicine, whether routine care or an unexpected event requiring acute intervention, requires communication between a patient and physician. My philosophy is one in which my patients are fully informed of all of the possible options (testing, results, interventions, outcomes) from the very beginning so they can contribute to the decisions we make together regarding their care. Well informed patient input is necessary to treat the whole patient and not just the problem at hand. | Why I entered medicine | Obstetrics and gynecology allows me to combine two facets of medicine -- acute and sometimes high-risk care as well as ongoing, routine visits. I enjoy getting to know my patients over time and caring for them and their unborn children during the exciting time of pregnancy. The delivery culminates in an emotional event that I am proud to share with my patients. Gynecology is the ongoing care of women. Over time a trust develops between a patient and physician, which is important to help guide patients through changes in their life cycle. I respect these relationships with my patients and enjoy hearing the updates patients provide about themselves at their yearly exam. Solo practice allows me to get to know my patients very well. This enforces these relationships and is a large part of what makes medicine so satisfying to me. | Community involvement | Being a solo ob/gyn and being available for my patients every day and night does not allow much time for outside commitments. My life can be quite unpredictable. I am, however, active in my church and have been involved with my sons school projects, trips and fundraisers. | Personal interests | I enjoy reading, antiquing, needlework projects and gardening. Re-connecting with friends is also very satisfying to me. However, a simple, unhurried meal with my family is one of my favorite ways to spend an evening. Philosophy of care | In the field of urogynecology many conditions can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life. Issues such as pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence can cause meaningful distress, and I believe it is important to offer care for them. I truly enjoy helping women get back to the activities and personal interests these conditions may have been preventing. By educating, counseling and treating my patients, I provide them care at the highest level with the comfort of a trustworthy physician. | Why I entered medicine | My life prior to medical school was focused on athletics. I played competitive basketball until college and experienced many injuries and even surgeries of my own. I always knew I wanted to become a doctor, and in dealing with these injuries I became fascinated by the technical skills and hand-eye coordination required to be a surgeon. As I progressed through medical school and my residency training, I also developed a passion for caring for women, likely stemming from many years of working with my teammates and females of all backgrounds. Urogynecology, or female pelvic reconstructive surgery, is a highly rewarding field that allows me to develop relationships with the women in our community while being able to offer them optimal care in the office or the operating room. | Community involvement | Aside from medicine, I still enjoy being involved in athletics and helping our local community. In 2021, I joined the advisory board of Philadelphia Rise, an elite youth Nike basketball league. I was also honored to be a part of “Dream Big,” an event sponsored by the Mike Pettine Foundation in Doylestown that focuses on guiding teens and young adults through obstacles as they head into their future careers. | Personal interests | Outside of work, I enjoy being active and spending time with my growing family. We love to be outdoors, at parks, in our backyard or at the beach. Fitness is also a big part of my life, and I enjoy maintaining an active lifestyle, including running and Pilates. Her clinical expertise encompasses Urinary Incontinence, Stress Urinary Incontinence, and Uterine Prolapse. What is an OB-GYN?
An obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) is a doctor specializing in the reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth of individuals assigned female at birth. Obstetricians focus on care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, while gynecologists manage conditions affecting the female reproductive system, like menstrual disorders or infections. Most OB-GYNs are trained in both fields, which allows them to handle a wide range of health needs. Gynecologists who are not also obstetricians do not deliver babies, while OB-GYNs typically provide this service.
What are the different types of OB-GYNs?
OB-GYNs can specialize in various areas, depending on their training and focus:
- General OB-GYNs: Provide comprehensive reproductive health care, including routine exams, contraception, and pregnancy care.
- Perinatologists (Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists): Focus on high-risk pregnancies, including complications like gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.
- Reproductive Endocrinologists: Help with fertility issues and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
- Gynecologic Oncologists: Specialize in diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system.
- Urogynecologists: Treat pelvic floor disorders, including incontinence and uterine prolapse.
How often should I visit an OB-GYN?
The frequency of visits depends on your health and circumstances:
- Individuals who are not pregnant: Should visit an OB-GYN once a year for preventive care, including pelvic exams and screenings.
- Pregnant individuals: Typically have monthly visits during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy, biweekly visits from weeks 28 to 36, and weekly visits from week 36 until delivery.
Your doctor might recommend more frequent visits if you have a high-risk condition.
What age should an individual start seeing an OB-GYN?
People assigned female at birth should schedule their first visit to an OB-GYN between the ages of 13 and 15. This initial visit is often a conversation about health, development, and any questions or concerns. Pap smear screenings for cervical cancer generally begin at age 21, although earlier screenings may be recommended based on individual health needs, such as having a family history of cervical cancer.
Can OB-GYNs perform surgeries?
Yes, OB-GYNs are trained surgeons capable of performing a wide range of procedures. Common surgeries include cesarean sections (C-sections), hysterectomies, laparoscopic surgeries for conditions like endometriosis, and removal of ovarian cysts. They also perform minimally invasive procedures like dilation and curettage (D&C) or tubal ligation for sterilization. Some OB-GYNs focus heavily on surgical care, depending on their specialization or patient needs.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different OBGYN?
Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

What questions should I ask my OBGYN?
Here are some sample questions:
- Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
- What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
- What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
- Are there other specialists I need to see?
- What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?
