I have been honored to have spent my entire career, since completing my residency in 1986, working in the wonderful and diverse community of Hillsborough. Family medicine was a perfect career choice for me. I love the long-term relationships with patients of all ages. I particularly enjoy women's health, and I have grown fond of geriatrics, as the patient population I care for is aging. Outside of medicine, I have three young adult children and a great husband. I am a competitive masters swimmer, a cyclist, a triathlete, and I like to cook and read. Dr. Satter is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Coccydynia, Familial Hypertension, Hypertension, and Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism.

"I am a board-certified family medicine physician who was born in the Caribbean, namely ""America's Paradise"" St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. I gravitated towards the field of family medicine. I discovered that I enjoyed working in the outpatient setting early in my medical career along with serving under-served populations. I fell in love with the continuity of care, providing compassion and understanding, teamwork, and communication that family medicine encompasses. I chose Duke because I wanted to be part of an academic program, and loved the patient population. In my current position, I am passionate about primary care and prevention, pediatrics, adolescent medicine, chronic disease management, providing health care to under-served populations, and performing minor office procedures. I am a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine and the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, venturing to new restaurants, going to the movies, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. I am engaged to be married in August 2014.". My biggest honor and responsibility is finding out what is important to my patients. I make decisions with my patients, not for them. Actively listening allows me to understand my patients and work with them collaboratively to come up with the best plan for their care. This partnership is the basis of long-term relationships, from childhood through adolescence and adulthood. For me, these long-term relationships are the most rewarding part of family medicine. My osteopathic medicine background allows me to take a more holistic approach to health and medicine. I want to empower my patients to understand their health and to live a good life. I am their cheerleader and advocate! When I am not chasing my toddler twin boys, I like to get crafty, take photos, and paint. My other interests include rock scrambling, handball, and trying new foods. Her top areas of expertise are Hypertension, Familial Hypertension, and Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism.

Creating long-term relationships with families has been my goal for my primary care practice. I enjoy being able to see multiple family generations. These relationships provide insight into the challenges that family members have when dealing with medical issues. They also tend to provide clues to obstacles that may impede a patient's ability to have or maintain their wellness. I am thankful that I have been allowed the opportunity to work for Duke in my home county of Alamance. Although I love to travel, coming home to family and friends is where my heart belongs. I enjoy living in the community with my patients. My patients are not just patients, but are the people in my community that meet me in the grocery store, fix my car, cut my hair, and teach my kids. They are important people in my life and I desire to see their health thrive. Her top areas of expertise are Hypertension, Familial Hypertension, Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism, and Sitosterolemia.

I chose a career in family medicine because I enjoy providing preventative health care and disease management to all ages. My approach to patient care is that of a partnership. I advise patients that my role as a primary care physician is to educate patients on current evidence-based guidelines for preventative health and for disease management. I want to ensure that patients are able to make an educated decision regarding their health care. My ideal vision of family medicine includes providing care to three generations, where I am the primary care provider to the grandparents, the parents, and the children. Understanding the dynamics of three generations of a family allows me insight into family medical history, family social dynamics, and family emotional stressors. This insight enhances my medical decision making for each individual in the family. I am married and have two children. We have two rescue dogs who keep us very busy. I spend most of my time outside of work with my family. I do prioritize exercise for my personal health maintenance. Her top areas of expertise are Sitosterolemia, Premature Ovarian Failure, High Cholesterol, and Hypertension.

I consider it a great privilege to be a primary care provider and to get to know each patient’s life story. I make an effort to take a holistic and collaborative approach to patient care. I understand the symptoms a patient has are part of their story and that the interventions we choose must bear in mind the continued development of that story. As a family doctor, I care for newborn infants, the oldest adults, and everyone in between. I specialize in sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine. In sleep medicine, we are looking at patients with sleep-disordered breathing and other conditions, such as narcolepsy. It’s a fairly common problem and causes so many other symptoms that many times it is missed. A lot of patients may experience fatigue, trouble falling asleep, daytime sleepiness, and loud snoring, and the spouse may observe stoppages in breathing. Patients may also experience difficulty concentrating, acid reflux, headaches, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, and even cardiac issues. My job is to diagnose sleep disorders so we can resolve these issues. I also practice pulmonary medicine, mostly treating patients with COPD. I try to put myself in the patient’s shoes. That approach works well and helps me get a better feel for what my patient may be going through. My favorite part is meeting people, getting to know them and becoming a detective as to what is going on and how I can fix it. That technical approach gives me great satisfaction. His top areas of expertise are Hypertension, Glucocorticoid-Remediable Aldosteronism, Familial Hypertension, and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

I am excited to be back in North Carolina, particularly as part of Duke Primary Care, after spending the last seven years in Seattle. Growing up in rural western North Carolina, I became aware of health disparities and wanted to make an impact. Great educators and mentors guided me into medicine, and I chose family medicine as the best way to effect change in the community. Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending weekends with my wife and our two kids, exploring local farmers markets and bookstores. I'm also a huge fan of UNC and Seattle sports, so feel free to chat about the latest games. His top area of expertise is Rheumatoid Vasculitis.

I love being a family medicine primary care provider because it allows me to get to know my patients over a lifetime and take care of entire families of all different shapes and sizes. It is a privilege to partner with folks to help them achieve their personal health goals. I like to focus on promoting wellness through preventative medicine and risk reduction. I also know that social factors, environment, community, and emotional well-being affect physical health, so I try to keep those factors in mind, especially when managing chronic illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. What is a primary care physician (PCP)?

A primary care physician (PCP) is the first doctor people go to when they feel sick or need a check-up. This doctor helps with many different health problems, gives advice to keep patients healthy, and treats common illnesses. A PCP also keeps track of a person’s overall health and can refer them to a specialist if more specific care is needed.

What’s the difference between a primary care physician (PCP) and a specialist?

The main difference between a PCP and a specialist is the kind of health conditions they treat. PCPs care for people of all ages and treat a wide range of health issues, from the common cold to sports injuries. They also focus on preventive care, such as vaccines to prevent illnesses or screenings to catch diseases before they become serious.

Specialists, on the other hand, have advanced training in a specific area of medicine like cardiology (heart health) or neurology (brain health). There are many kinds of specialists on MediFind, each with their own focus. When needed, PCPs will help patients understand when they need to see a specialist. PCPs will also collaborate with specialists on a treatment plan specific to their patients’ needs.

What is another name for a primary care physician?

There are a few different types of primary care doctors. In addition to primary care providers, a primary care physician may also be called a general practitioner, family doctor, or internist. There are also PCPs with special training to work with specific patient populations. Pediatricians, for example, are PCPs who work with children, while geriatricians are PCPs who work with older adults.

Why do people have a primary care physician?

People have a primary care physician to help keep them healthy and to have a doctor they can go to for most of their health needs. A PCP helps with regular check-ups, treats illnesses, and can help manage long-term health problems. That’s why it’s helpful for patients to maintain long-term relationships with their PCPs if possible.

Why does my health insurance require me to see a primary care physician?

Health insurance requires patients to see a primary care physician because a PCP helps keep people healthy with preventive care, which lowers costs for the insurer.
