My clinical interests span the continuum of kidney transplantation. I enjoy counseling patients with kidney disease about the considerable benefits and potential risks of kidney transplantation. I take pride also in providing close care for kidney transplant recipients. Outside of clinic, I work with several of our national transplant organizations considering health policy and education relevant to the field of transplantation.

Duke Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Clinic - Clinic 2B/2C
I am the medical director of the kidney and pancreas transplant programs at Duke Health, and I take care of patients undergoing kidney transplants. What led me into medicine was a passion for taking care of patients. Kidney transplant requires a very complex team, and I enjoy the collaboration among providers and the challenge of helping the team operate more efficiently. I love seeing patients and developing relationships with them. I always try to be very open and candid about the process and plan for care. When I evaluate patients, I always try to view them as a whole person to make sure that transplant is the right choice for them. I grew up in New Mexico but have lived in North Carolina for over two decades. I now consider myself a native North Carolinian and a die-hard Duke fan. I joined the Division of Nephrology in July 2015 after completing fellowship in Nephrology. I mainly take care of patients in our kidney transplant program, which includes evaluating patients seeking candidacy for kidney transplant, evaluating potential living donors, and caring for patients after transplant. I also enjoy teaching medical students, residents, and fellows and I am active in the School of Medicine teaching physiology, clinical skills, and communication skills. I am a researcher and heart transplant specialist who also serves as medical director for the heart transplant program at Duke. From the time I was a child, I have been fascinated by how the human body works, specifically by how blood travels around the body. I became especially interested in how the heart behaves when it is normal and how it adapts when it is damaged. As a transplant cardiologist, I get to combine these interests with cutting-edge medicine to help people to live longer and feel better, even when hearts fail. I enjoy getting to know patients and their loved ones as they go through their transplant journey at Duke. I am also fortunate to be part of an experienced team that has been together for over a decade taking care of heart transplant patients.
