Dr. Che-kai Tsao

Kai Tsao, MD, MS, is the system chief of solid tumor oncology, medical director of the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center, and medical director of the medical oncology prostate cancer program at the Northwell Cancer Institute. He specializes in cancers of the genitourinary organs and has more than a decade of clinical experience. His research focuses on the development of biomarkers and novel therapies for patients with genitourinary cancers.

Dr. Tsao was inspired to become an oncologist after witnessing many close family and friends suffering from cancer. He completed medical school training at SUNY Downstate, an internal medicine residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital. He earned a master's degree in healthcare delivery leadership at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed Lean Six Sigma training at Johns Hopkins.

Prior to joining Northwell, Dr. Tsao served as medical director of the Ruttenberg Treatment Center, medical director of the medical oncology prostate cancer program, and physician leader for internal oncology collaborations at the Mount Sinai Hospital, Tisch Cancer Institute. In these roles, Dr. Tsao and his team built a cancer center that is patient centered, quality driven, scientifically innovative, and provided multi-disciplinary care to patients with cancer.

For me, patient care much more than the cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is essential to address the many needs of our cancer patients: emotional well-being, social support, nutrition, physical activity, financial challenges and more. We aim to provide the best support for our patients, one at a time.

Dr. Tsao is an accomplished physician-scientist who has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications in the field of genitourinary oncology. He serves as associate editor of Genitourinary Oncology, Frontiers in Oncology. His leadership in carrying out complex clinical trials in targeted therapies and immunotherapies positions his patients at the forefront of cutting-edge cancer research and patient-centered care.

What I most enjoy every day is seeing patients under our care, despite the devastation of their cancer diagnosis, beating their cancer and living a life that was not considered a possibility years ago. Our mission at Northwell Cancer Institute is to make this a reality for every single patient.
