Dr. McCaffrey was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She received a BS in biology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan. She then attended Wayne State University School of Medicine on a full academic scholarship and graduated in the top 5% percent of her class, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She completed her general surgery residency at Emory University in 2006, followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI in 2007. After completion of fellowship she joined Oakland Colon and Rectal Associates in Royal Oak, MI where she practiced until 2009.Dr. McCaffrey was recruited to join Piedmont Colorectal Associates in 2009, and she was happy to return to Atlanta. She has been a member of the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital staff since 2009 and Piedmont Henry Hospital since 2015. She is also the primary colon and rectal surgeon at The Shepherd Center, a world-renowned rehabilitation center for catastrophic spinal cord and brain injuries. She is board certified in colon and rectal surgery, as well as general surgery. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
