Dr. Matthew Martinez is director of Atlantic Health Sports Cardiology at Morristown Medical Center and a nationally recognized expert in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). He specializes in identifying and treating athletes who have underlying heart issues such as arrhythmia or HCM, a hereditary medical condition where the walls of the heart become excessively thick, obstructing blood flow from leaving the heart. Dr. Martinez treats patients at the Center for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, New Jersey’s first multidisciplinary program dedicated to diagnosing and treating HCM.Board-certified and fellowship-trained in cardiovascular disease at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Dr. Martinez serves as a cardiologist for the Major League Soccer, Jets, and NBA players associations, and the NFL and NHL Combines. He received an American College of Cardiology Emerging Faculty Award, has led many educational events nationally and internationally on various cardiovascular topics, and regularly presents on sudden cardiac arrest at national meetings. He previously served as chair of the American College of Cardiology’s Sports and Exercise Section.
