Overview
Alisha completed her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Thomas Jefferson University, which was a direct-entry program she matriculated into from her undergraduate studies. During her clinical year of PA school, she was awarded the recognition of becoming a Future Educator Fellow through the Physician Assistant Education Association. She attended the PAEA Education Forum Conference where she presented the importance of Mandatory Child Abuse Awareness and Training in Didactic PA Education.
Alisha is also an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at George Washington University. She lectures current students on spondyloarthropathies, connective tissue disease, and crystal disease. She holds a great interest in teaching and educating future physician assistants and medical professionals.
Alisha is also a current member of several professional societies, including the American College of Rheumatology, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Pennsylvania Academy of Physician Assistants, the Physician Assistant Education Association, and the Maryland Academy of Physician Assistants.
Alisha also holds an interest in the role of cannabinoids in the treatment of rheumatic conditions and is certified to authorize the medical use of cannabinoids/THC in Virginia and Maryland. She believes that the best patient care and outcomes are achieved through compassion & education.

She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine at Loyola University in Chicago. She completed her fellowship in rheumatology at New York University’s Langone Medical Center where she served as chief fellow in her final year. Following her fellowship, Dr. Berhanu joined the medical faculty at George Washington University as Assistant Professor of Rheumatology where she had an active clinical practice and trained new physicians.Dr. Berhanu has a clinical interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound for which she received specialized training from USSONAR and obtained RhMSUS certification from the American College of Rheumatology. She applies her expertise with musculoskeletal ultrasound to her clinical interest in gout and has authored or co-authored several articles on the therapeutic management of gout. In addition to her research interests, Dr. Berhanu has long been dedicated to community service, both locally and abroad. She served as the 2018 Arthritis Foundation “Walk to Cure Arthritis” Medical Honoree and is particularly proud to have worked with the rheumatology program at the teaching hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
