
Overview
Dr. Fernando Goes, the Director of our Stanley and Elizabeth Star Precision Medicine Center of Excellence in Mood Disorders, is a psychiatrist focused on the study and treatment of severe mood disorders. As a disease-oriented clinician-scientist, his goal in leading the center is to better understand the causes, course, and treatment of severe mood disorders to facilitate the development of better treatments and implement improvements in patient care. His current research project encompasses genomic studies of mood disorders diverse populations, clinical trials of new medications, and the clinical utility of novel wearables technology to better track mood, sleep and activity. Dr. Goes directs the Bayview Mood Disorders Clinic, where he cares for patients with bipolar disorders and sees patients for consultations at the East Baltimore campus.

A native of Athens, Greece, Professor Lyketsos graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in Psychology and from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis with a Medical Doctorate. He completed residency and Chief Residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, as well as a fellowship in clinical epidemiology. An active clinician, teacher, and researcher, Dr. Lyketsos is a world expert in the care and treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD). He carried out pioneering work on the epidemiology and treatment of neuropsychiatric features of AD. His team is developing biomarkers to accelerate treatment development for AD while designing and implementing innovative clinical trials. He leads efforts to ensure the provision of state-of-the-art Dementia Care for people with dementia in the community. Dr. Lyketsos is the Elizabeth Plank Althouse Professor at Johns Hopkins University. He directs the Johns Hopkins Bayview Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, as well as the Richman Family Precision Medicine Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease and the Memory and Alzheimer’s Treatment Center. He is the recipient of multiple awards including the 2022 Argo Award for Science from the President of the Hellenic Republic. He has authored/co-authored over 450 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, commentaries, as well as five books. His work has been cited over 76,000 times with an h-index of 149. A 2021 Stanford University publication reported that he ranked #13 out of 9,246 scientists worldwide (all-time) in the field of Geriatrics. Castle-Connolly has named Dr. Lyketsos as one of America’s Top Doctors every year since 2001.
