Dr. Hongtao Liu

Hongtao Liu, MD, is a UW Health hematologist and an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He provides care for patients with leukemia and other cancerous blood diseases, including myeloproliferative neoplasm (cancers that start in the bone marrow, where blood cells are made).Excited about the recent breakthroughs in treatment, Dr. Liu performs stem cell transplants and cell therapy for patients with blood disorders. He believes in finding cures whenever possible for his patients.Dr. Liu takes a patient-centered approach to care. He enjoys building relationships with patients and staying in touch with them, even after treatment. As part of his commitment to open and ongoing communication, he makes himself available to answer questions outside of office hours. His goal is to help patients live long and healthy lives.In addition to his clinical practice and teaching role, Dr. Liu researches new treatments for leukemia and ways to improve outcomes for patients receiving stem cell transplants and cell therapy.In his free time, Dr. Liu enjoys playing soccer and tennis, jogging, watching historical films and reading.The most rewarding part of my work is hearing from my patients years after they were cured.
