Overview
Dr. Yousif Ahmad is an interventional cardiologist who specializes in caring for patients with chronic total occlusions (persistent blockages of the arteries that supply the heart) and other complex coronary abnormalities. He has expertise in performing transcatheter (minimally invasive) aortic valve replacements, or TAVRs, for patients with aortic stenosis (narrowing that obstructs blood flow). He enjoys working with patients and families to understand their priorities and tailor their care accordingly. In his research, Ahmad studies coronary revascularization (treatments that restore adequate blood flow) in heart failure. Also interested in clinical trials, he uses meta-analytic methodologies to synthesize complex datasets, with the goal of establishing the best standards of care for various problems in cardiology. He has published more than 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading journals and authored multiple book chapters. Ahmad earned his medical degree from the University of Nottingham in England. He completed a residency at Birmingham City and Sandwell General hospitals and fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology at Imperial College London. He then completed a fellowship in complex and high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and mechanical circulatory support at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a fellowship in structural heart disease at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He also earned a doctorate in aortic and coronary physiology from Imperial College London. Ahmad's achievements, including his leadership and research, have been recognized with awards from several professional organizations, including the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and British Cardiac Society. He is regularly invited to lecture at prominent cardiology conferences all over the world. Prior to joining UCSF, he served as director of Yale University's program in complex and high-risk PCI.
Dr. Ahmad is highly rated in 11 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Coronary Heart Disease, Aortic Valve Stenosis, Heart Attack, Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).
His clinical research consists of co-authoring 157 peer reviewed articles. MediFind looks at clinical research from the past 15 years.

Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.
Stanford Health Care
Alan Yeung is an Interventional Cardiologist and a Cardiologist in Stanford, California. Dr. Yeung is highly rated in 28 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Angina, Coronary Heart Disease, Aortic Valve Stenosis, Heart Transplant, and Aortic Valve Replacement.
Heart Valve Disease Clinic
Dr. Sammy Elmariah is an interventional cardiologist who cares for adults with heart valve disease, coronary artery disease and congenital heart disease. He is an expert in transcatheter (minimally invasive) heart valve procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER or MitraClip) and transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). He also specializes in assessing new medical devices for repairing or replacing the heart's tricuspid valve. The overall goal of Elmariah's research is to advance transcatheter and other surgical procedures for heart valve disease in order to maximize patient health and outcomes. He leads several clinical trials (studies with human volunteers) focused on valvular heart disease. These include landmark studies testing new transcatheter devices that treat heart valve disease without the need for open heart surgery. He and his research team are also investigating how to increase access to heart valve disease treatments and improve patient involvement in the management of their own care. And they are studying biomarkers (distinctive, measurable substances) in the blood that may help doctors determine the optimal time for individual patients to undergo heart valve procedures. His research team is funded by the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, U.S. Department of Defense and several industry partners. Elmariah earned his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed fellowships in interventional cardiology and structural heart disease at Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. He also has a master of public health degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Sammy Elmariah is married to Dr. Sarina Elmariah, a dermatologist at UCSF, and they are the proud parents of two wonderful boys. Dr. Elmariah is highly rated in 13 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Aortic Valve Stenosis, Mitral Stenosis, Patent Foramen Ovale, Aortic Valve Replacement, and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).
