Overview
I specialize in the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) tract. Specifically trained in laparoscopic resection of inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer, I perform the full range of colorectal operations, including reconstructive operations, such as ileal pouches. My clinical, research, and administrative efforts are all focused on implementing perioperative care practices that ensure best patient outcomes. Bridging specialties to best care for GI surgery patients, I particularly enjoy combined cases. For instance, I regularly operate with the pediatric surgery team on younger patients with IBD or pelvic cancer. Until my exposure to surgery in medical school, I thought I wanted the patient-doctor relationship well-known to primary care. With experience, however, I realized this relationship was possible in the practice of surgery. Colorectal surgery allows me the privilege of long-term relationships with a great variety of patients; close relationships with my colleagues; and administrative positions that promote the best care.

Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.
Duke Cancer Center
Every day, my goal is to take the best surgical care of my patients' kidney or prostate cancer by offering the most up-to-date minimally invasive surgical treatments, while making sure that their experiences and outcomes at Duke Health are top-notch! As we look at the scans together and discuss biopsy results, it is important to me that I spend all of the time that my patients and their families need to clearly understand their diagnosis as well as all treatment options, so that we can make joint decisions about next steps and their treatment plan. Many of my patients are referred from all over the country to seek highly specialized urology care, including nonsurgical focal cryotherapy for prostate cancer, robotic surgery for prostate cancer, or robotic surgical removal of their kidney tumor called a partial nephrectomy, among other treatments, with our multidisciplinary, collaborative team. I always reassure and share my positive outlook with my patients as we navigate the health system together. My patients know that, as their physician, I will be their champion and advise them and guide them through their treatment. We are in this together. Dr. Polascik is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in Reconstructive Urology Surgery. Duke Ambulatory Surgery Center
I am a colorectal surgeon and researcher who has been at Duke for about 25 years. I see patients who have issues with the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus. These issues include benign tumors, cancers, hemorrhoids and fistulas. The best part of my job is operating. The operating room is a special place, where we have been able to put a number of processes in place so things run smoothly and we can give patients the best chance at a good outcome. The fact that you can take a condition, operate and potentially cure a patient is fascinating to me. As a faculty member, I also enjoy when I have the chance to teach residents during the operation. When I am not at work, I enjoy fishing, hiking and playing tennis with my children. Dr. Mantyh is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Reconstructive Urology Surgery. His top areas of expertise are Colorectal Cancer, Genital Warts, Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colostomy, and Ileostomy.
Duke Cancer Center Genitourinary (GU) Clinic
I am a urologic oncologist who is specifically trained in the surgical management of cancer. As a result of my fellowship and training, I feel very comfortable handling complex cancer cases. My patients are my favorite part of my job. I feel it’s incredibly important to make a connection with the patient and listen to them. It’s an amazing privilege to be able to take care of another human being and an honor to operate on someone. Surgery is a unique specialty, it’s a direct invasion of a person’s body and they are putting their trust in you. Duke is an amazing place. I was immediately attracted to Duke’s commitment of excellence when I first came here for training in the 1980s. Outside of my job, I enjoy fishing, golfing and spending time with my wife.
