Prior to joining the Nemours, Dr. Viswanathan served as a faculty member of the Innovative Feeding Disorders Program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. His academic vision is to develop translational clinical research protocols to transform dysfunctional feeding patterns in NICU infants. He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed articles and is an active peer reviewer for a dozen leading pediatric journals. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Dysphagia Research Society. After my extensive pediatric training in India, UK and the US, I found looking after and caring for critically ill newborn children to be my calling and decided to become a neonatologist. There is nothing more satisfying than watching an unwell newborn baby get better and go home. I believe in the adage “There are two things we should give our children: one is roots and the other is wings.” Being born early or sick is not something we can control, but I strive to provide the best possible care to enable them to hold their ground in the world outside of the NICU. There have been many advances in neonatal care in recent years. I am an avid researcher and believe in evidence-based practices to provide the most up-to-date care. I am particularly passionate about preventing and solving feeding and nutrition-related disorders in neonates as I strongly believe that optimizing early nutrition and growth is critical for the long-term health of newborn babies. No two babies are the same. This is especially true in neonatology. I treat every baby with passion and purpose by putting the babies and their families at the center of everything by sharing timely information and building trust. I believe in working collaboratively with my team and partnering with parents for the best possible outcome for each and every baby. Dr. Viswanathan is highly rated in 2 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Premature Infant, Gastroesophageal Reflux in Infants, Anemia, and Intraventricular Hemorrhage of the Newborn.

I always knew neonatology would be my path. I joined Nemours because their family-centered care philosophy aligns with mine. Here, parents can stay with their baby in the neonatal unit and help with care. I include them in decisions and respect their insights and instincts. In many ways, they are the most important members of the care team. Nobody goes through pregnancy thinking that their baby will end up in a neonatal intensive care unit. But when it happens, I want to be the one to help make it better and easier for the family. The whole idea of watching a premature baby grow and go home fascinates me. I have a chance to make a difference that can affect a whole lifetime. I became a certified lactation consultant so I could help and encourage mothers of premature or underweight infants who can’t suckle at first to persist with breastfeeding. Breast milk is the best protection we know of for these delicate babies. I am passionate about helping moms give them the best possible start. Part of my job is to guide parents through the process of having a baby in the neonatal unit and to help them cope. I always tell parents that we are a team. I want them to communicate any concerns about their baby. They are their baby’s best advocates. I believe the insights they have may be the most valuable. Dr. Prado is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Microcephaly, Congenital Syphilis, Patent Ductus Arteriosus, and Polydactyly.

Dr. Claudia Taboada is a board-certified maternal fetal medicine specialist at Nemours Children’s Hospital. She has been an invited lecturer, an associate professor in maternal fetal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology, and has published medical journal articles in her field. For her work, Dr. Taboada was named a March of Dimes Medical Honoree for 2019. When I was in kindergarten I told my parents I wanted to be a doctor. I remember this was shortly after having to go to the emergency department for an injury on my foot. I was fascinated by the doctors I met and everything that was happening around me. My parents encouraged me to pursue my dream. They encouraged and supported me during all my education. I remember that they brought me groceries in college and medical school. I was very lucky in that aspect. I wanted to pursue pediatric emergency medicine when I started medical school. I believe it was all linked to my childhood experience. However, as I rotated as a third-year medical student, I was drawn to internal medicine with a focus on women's health. Maternal Fetal Medicine allows me to take care of women with high-risk, pre-existing medical conditions during their pregnancies. MFM also allows me to manage high-risk pregnancies, such as multiple gestations or abnormal fetal structural findings on ultrasound. I treat my patients like family. I am honest with them and convey that my role is to make sure they have the best maternal and fetal outcome. I work hard to establish a good relationship with my colleagues to ensure good patient care.  I hope that my patients will feel confident that we will provide them with the best care during their pregnancy, forming multidisciplinary teams for their needs — including, as needed, team members from a variety of medical specialties at Nemours, social work and others. I have a special interest in diagnostic testing (amniocentesis and CVS), cerclage placement and preterm labor. And, in a prior position, I started a program for medication-assisted treatment in pregnancy for women with an opioid addiction. I worked closely with the NICU team and the primary OB team. I would like to continue the outreach into my new community here at Nemours. Dr. Taboada is highly rated in 7 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are Premature Infant, Methimazole Antenatal Exposure, Gestational Diabetes, and Placenta Previa.

    What is an OB-GYN?

An obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) is a doctor specializing in the reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth of individuals assigned female at birth. Obstetricians focus on care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, while gynecologists manage conditions affecting the female reproductive system, like menstrual disorders or infections. Most OB-GYNs are trained in both fields, which allows them to handle a wide range of health needs. Gynecologists who are not also obstetricians do not deliver babies, while OB-GYNs typically provide this service.

What are the different types of OB-GYNs?

OB-GYNs can specialize in various areas, depending on their training and focus:

    • General OB-GYNs: Provide comprehensive reproductive health care, including routine exams, contraception, and pregnancy care.
    • Gynecologic Oncologists: Specialize in diagnosing and treating cancers of the female reproductive system.

How often should I visit an OB-GYN?

The frequency of visits depends on your health and circumstances

    • Individuals who are not pregnant: Should visit an OB-GYN once a year for preventive care, including pelvic exams and screenings.
    • Pregnant individuals: Typically have monthly visits during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy, biweekly visits from weeks 28 to 36, and weekly visits from week 36 until delivery.

Your doctor might recommend more frequent visits if you have a high-risk condition.

What age should an individual start seeing an OB-GYN?

People assigned female at birth should schedule their first visit to an OB-GYN between the ages of 13 and 15. This initial visit is often a conversation about health, development, and any questions or concerns. Pap smear screenings for cervical cancer generally begin at age 21, although earlier screenings may be recommended based on individual health needs, such as having a family history of cervical cancer.

    Can OB-GYNs perform surgeries?

Yes, OB-GYNs are trained surgeons capable of performing a wide range of procedures. Common surgeries include cesarean sections (C-sections), hysterectomies, laparoscopic surgeries for conditions like endometriosis, and removal of ovarian cysts. They also perform minimally invasive procedures like dilation and curettage (D&C) or tubal ligation for sterilization. Some OB-GYNs focus heavily on surgical care, depending on their specialization or patient needs.

When should I see an OBGYN near Kissimmee, FL?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a OBGYN near Kissimmee, FL?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank OBGYNs near Kissimmee, FL?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by OBGYNs near Kissimmee, FL?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a OBGYN in Kissimmee?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the OBGYN search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different OBGYN?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a OBGYN near Kissimmee, FL?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my OBGYN?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my OBGYN may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals.
