Dr. Matthew J. Ellis
Overview
I am the medical director of the kidney and pancreas transplant programs at Duke Health, and I take care of patients undergoing kidney transplants. What led me into medicine was a passion for taking care of patients. Kidney transplant requires a very complex team, and I enjoy the collaboration among providers and the challenge of helping the team operate more efficiently. I love seeing patients and developing relationships with them. I always try to be very open and candid about the process and plan for care. When I evaluate patients, I always try to view them as a whole person to make sure that transplant is the right choice for them. I grew up in New Mexico but have lived in North Carolina for over two decades. I now consider myself a native North Carolinian and a die-hard Duke fan. In my free time, I am very active with my family and coach soccer and basketball.

I am particularly interested in liver transplantation as well as the care of patients with autoimmune and cholestatic liver disease including primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. In addition to patient care, I have an interest in medical education. Because new treatments and discoveries are constantly being made within the field of hepatology, I am continually learning and enjoy sharing this knowledge with patients, families, and medical trainees.
