Dr. Tom Thomas is an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) and the director of Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) at the Leonard B. Kahn Head and Neck Cancer Institute at Morristown Medical Center. His clinical interests include the comprehensive surgical treatment for benign and malignant head and neck tumors. His focus is on minimally invasive surgical techniques such as TORS and Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM). Dr. Thomas is also director of Sleep Surgery at Morristown Medical Center. He treats patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea and is currently performing the new FDA approved INSPIRE hypoglossal nerve stimulation implant for his sleep apnea patients. In addition, he sees patients with chronic sinusitis and performs functional endoscopic sinus surgery and other related surgeries. Dr. Thomas welcomes difficult cases and strives to provide the best possible care and consideration for his patients, as well as offering second opinions as needed. His minimally invasive surgical techniques, combined with a microvascular reconstructive surgical approach, helps to preserve important functions such as speech and swallowing that will be affected by head and neck cancer and its treatments. He has extensive experience in Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) related head and neck cancer, especially oropharyngeal (tonsil and base of tongue) cancers. He has given lectures on this topic nationally and internationally. In addition, He has expertise in treating head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, various salivary gland cancers, thyroid and parathyroid cancers, laryngeal cancers and sinus and skull base cancers. Dr. Thomas received his medical degree from the Howard University College of Medicine with the highest academic honor of AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha). He completed his surgical internship at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and his residency at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He also completed a fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology, microvascular surgery and Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his fellowship, he joined the medical staff at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/ Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. In addition, he has a Master of Public Health degree from John Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore. He is affiliated with Atlantic Medical Group, and is a participating provider of Atlantic Accountable Care Organization. When he is not seeing patients, Dr. Thomas enjoys spending time with his family and friends, travelling, photography, painting and tennis.
