Overview
I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do.

Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.

I have been a faculty member at Duke for 30 years, specializing in the care of patients with epilepsy or sleep disorders. During that time, I have seen tremendous progress in the treatments available in both areas, and I remain excited about being able to provide those advances to my patients. During my neurology and neurophysiology training at Duke, I developed an abiding fondness for my colleagues and patients, so it was an easy decision to stay on as an attending physician. I have the privilege of working with patients in both the hospital and clinic. As a hospital neurologist, my interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of acute neurologic problems, such as seizures, head injuries, infections, and autoimmune conditions. My outpatient practice focuses on the treatment of epilepsy in patients with hard-to-control seizures. In both the hospital and clinic, I have the pleasure of working with the excellent medical students, residents, and fellows of Duke University Hospital, along with nationally and internationally recognized colleagues.
