Richard L. McGough, III, MD, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and orthopaedic traumatology fellowship at Brown University. He also completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, remaining there as a surgical oncology research fellow. Dr. McGough is currently a professor of orthopaedic surgery with a dual appointment in the Division of Surgical Oncology. He serves as chief of musculoskeletal oncology at UPMC. Dr. McGough has been active with the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has published widely in orthopaedic oncology, and maintains an extremely active lecturing schedule both nationally and internationally. Dr. McGough specializes in musculoskeletal tumor surgery, including tumors of the pelvis, megaprosthetic reconstruction, limb salvage, and other sarcoma surgery. Dr. McGough pioneered the “BrachyVAC” treatment for superficial malignancies, and performs both clinical and research work developing this procedure. Dr. McGough's primary research interest is osseointegration prostheses for amputees, and he performed the first upper extremity osseointegration procedure in the United States. He serves as an extramural committee member for the Department of Defense's Osseointegration Program, and is actively pursuing the development of this technology for the American population. He has been named one of Pittsburgh's “Top Docs” by Best Doctor's Inc. in Pittsburgh Magazine, a UPMC “ACE,” and has been the recipient of the University of Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Residency's “Golden Apple” award in recognition of his teaching.
