Dr. Bharathi Upadhya

I am a pediatric cardiologist who cares for children with congenital or acquired heart disease and adults with congenital heart disease. I am also a specialist in fetal cardiology, and I provide prenatal diagnosis and counseling to expecting families. My primary area of clinical interest is non-invasive cardiac imaging across the spectrum of congenital heart disease, from the fetus to adult. I am the director of the Duke Pediatric/Congenital Cardiac MRI Program and a member of the Duke Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Center. I am also the program director for the Duke Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program and am passionate about training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists. I’m a pediatric cardiologist with a focus on interventional cardiology. We try to find less invasive ways to treat congenital heart disease. We’ve made tremendous advances in the last decade in treating diseases that used to require open heart surgery. We can now treat these with a much less invasive approach. In addition to seeing patients in the clinic, I do procedures in the cath lab like closing atrial septal defects and certain valve replacements. At Duke we collaborate and work well together using a team approach to help our patients. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my two children and getting outdoors.
