Dr. Ripley received the ‘Top Doctors’ award by the Houstonia Magazine and the ‘Star Faculty Award for Excellence in Patient Care'.Dr. Ripley focuses on the treatment of patients with mesothelioma in which he is the principal investigator of the actively enrolling trial, ‘NEMO: Combination of Induction Durvalumab and Tremelimumab alone versus Durvalumab and Tremelimumab with chemotherapy for Potentially Resectable Pleural Mesothelioma.’ In this trial, patients will receive the maximum treatment to beat this disease. Patients will undergo treatment with immunotherapy with or without chemotherapy, then they will undergo surgery with an extended pleurectomy decortication or extrapleural pneumonectomy, then they will receive one year of immunotherapy.Dr. Ripley leads the Ripley Lab for Translational Thoracic Oncology Research (Thoracic Surgical Oncology Translational Laboratory (bcm.edu)) in which he focuses on methods to undermine tumors ability to resist treatment. His laboratory is funded with two National Cancer Institute, NIH, R01 grants, ‘Targeting the Mitochondria to Overcome Resistance to Immune Checkpoint Inhibition in Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma,’ and ‘Novel strategies to improve mesothelioma therapy’. Additionally, he received an award from the DeGregorio Family Foundation Grant for Gastric and Esophageal Malignancies, ‘Targeting Mitochondrial Resistance to Apoptosis after Neoadjuvant Therapy in Esophageal Adenocarcinoma’ to improve treatment for patients with esophageal cancer.Prior to his faculty appointment at BCM, Dr. Ripley was an Associate Professor of Surgery at National Cancer Institute, NIH. Prior to the NIH faculty appointment, Dr. Ripley trained extensively in the care of patients with mesothelioma and thoracic cancers under world-renowned surgeons during his fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He also completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the NCI, NIH. Dr. Ripley did general surgery residency at the University of Colorado and received his Medical Doctorate from Vanderbilt University. Shawn S. Groth, M.D. is a board-certified general thoracic surgeon in Houston who specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery. After finishing his cardiothoracic surgery residency under Dr. David J. Sugarbaker at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Dr. Groth pursued an advanced fellowship in minimally invasive esophageal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Dr. James D. Luketich, a pioneer in minimally invasive foregut surgery. Dr. Groth seeks to bring that expertise to Baylor. As part of a team effort with other health care providers, Dr. Groth’s practice includes the multi-disciplinary management of benign and malignant disorders of the esophagus/foregut, lung, pleural space, mediastinum, chest wall, and diaphragm. As the Director of Esophageal Surgical Services at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, Dr. Groth will co-direct a newly created swallow center, which will provide a multi-disciplinary approach to managing patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal motility disorders. He provides minimally invasive approaches to managing benign (e.g., gastroesophageal reflux disease, paraesophageal hernias, achalasia, benign strictures, and esophageal diverticuli) and malignant foregut disorders (e.g., malignant strictures and esophageal and gastroesophageal junction cancers), as well as Barrett’s esophagus. Already a well-published investigator, Dr. Groth has presented his work at numerous national society meetings, including The American College of Surgeons, The American College of Chest Physicians, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and The American Association for Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Groth’s clinical research focuses on thoracic oncology outcomes research, health care disparities research, and clinical trials. He has explored several topics directed towards improving the guideline treatment of cancer patients. His basic science and translational research efforts are directed towards advancing personalized oncology.
