Overview
"My parents are from rural southwest Virginia. In 1949, they relocated to California for my father’s work as an academic researcher with NACA, later NASA. My brothers and I pursued scientific degrees. However, I felt that I could contribute more to our society by pursuing a technically-oriented career in cardiovascular medicine back in the rural South. Thus, in 1993, I brought stent technology to rural North Carolina. Most of my career has been dedicated to providing safe, thoughtful care in applying that technology. I also learned early on that good outcomes required simultaneous good general cardiovascular care. Now in my senior years, I practice general cardiovascular medicine, focusing on diagnosis, treatment, and education. The treatment mostly consists of advising on medications, diet, exercise, and referral for mechanical interventions when needed. In practice, I prefer the ""appropriate-but-least-intrusive action"" when pursuing optimal care.".

Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. Providers who actively participate in clinical research are generally at the forefront of the fields and aware of the most up-to-date advances in treatments for their patients.

I am excited about electrophysiology because it gives me the opportunity to improve patients' quality of life and allows patients to live longer in many cases. I ultimately went to medical school because of a passion for helping people, lifelong learning, and establishing meaningful relationships with my patients. I strongly believe in patient engagement and patient-centered decision making. Therefore, I believe that it is important to spend time educating patients and discussing all available treatment options. I encourage patients and their family members to ask questions so that I can help them understand their health. I offer medical therapy and catheter ablation therapy to patients with atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and ventricular tachycardia. I also place transvenous pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous defibrillators. I also perform lead extractions. I have two children, and I enjoy cooking, as well as playing golf, tennis, and skiing. I diagnose and treat cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, supraventricular tachycardias (SVT), atrial flutter, and ventricular arrhythmias. Collaborating with a genetic counselor specializing in cardiac disorders, I perform genetic testing for these conditions. In addition, I evaluate athletes with cardiac conditions, focusing on arrhythmias and abnormal electrocardiograms.
