He was a Chevening Scholar as a M.S. student in molecular genetics at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, as well as a Sam Cohen Windhoek Scholar as a Ph.D. student in cancer immunology at the Weizmann Institute in Israel. Dr. El-Shami also completed a residency in internal medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine, a fellowship in tumor immunology and biology at the National Cancer Institute, and a fellowship in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. El-Shami previously served as faculty at Georgetown University and George Washington University. Dr. El-Shami has been named a Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine for several years.
