I took a roundabout path to become a pulmonary critical care physician. I started as a physical therapist and subsequently returned to medical school in Australia. This was followed by 13 years of residency and fellowship in Australia, England and America. Throughout those years, I became strongly convinced that listening is the most essential part of caring for patients. I believe in, and practice, evidence-based medicine, but alongside medical science, I believe communication and community are integral to healing.
