Anil Kotru, MD, is a transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon specializing in liver and kidney transplantation, as well as pediatric kidney transplants. He performs a variety of surgical procedures including gallbladder removal, liver resection, peritoneal dialysis, catheter insertion and removal, vascular access and nephrectomies.|Dr. Kotru currently leads the pediatric kidney transplant program and serves as the director of quality for transplants at Geisinger. He has been instrumental in the development of the liver transplant program at Geisinger Medical Center. He gained international attention for his groundbreaking work on the link between patient expectations and clinical outcomes in transplant surgery and is widely sought after for his expertise in new models for healthcare payments and delivery, physician engagement and leadership.|Dr. Kotru earned his medical degree from Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla, India. He completed his residency in general surgery at St. James’ University Hospital in Leeds, United Kingdom, followed by a fellowship in multiorgan transplant at Washington University in Saint Louis.|Dr. Kotru is a member of the patients’ affairs committee of the United Network for Organ Sharing and has completed the American Society of Transplant Surgeons’ leadership program.|He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons.|In 2019, Dr. Kotru was selected for the prestigious Baldrige Performance Excellence Program in recognition of his leadership and contributions to transplant research.|Dr. Kotru is an accomplished researcher and author. He has published numerous papers, book chapters and scientific articles and sits on the review boards for leading journals in surgery and transplantation. He serves as clinical professor of surgery at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton.
