Dr. Christopher J. Magovern

Christopher Magovern, MD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon with Atlantic Medical Group (AMG). He is board- certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He joined Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates in 1998 and is currently a Director of that organization. Dr. Magovern performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement and repair, aortic surgery, re-operative cardiac surgery, off-pump surgery, transcatheter valve surgery, surgery for cardiac tumors, and laser surgery for extraction of pacemaker and ICD leads. Annually, he is consistently one of the busiest cardiac surgeons in the State of NJ, with a surgical mortality among the lowest in the state.After earning his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, Dr. Magovern completed his general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center and Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York City. During his tenure at Cornell Medical Center, he devoted two years to research in cardiac gene therapy, was part of a team that delivered the first gene therapy treatment to a human heart, and holds a patent related to that work.Dr. Magovern has published numerous times in peer-reviewed medical journals, contributed to a book chapter on myocardial angiogenesis, and presented at national conferences. He is a medical contributor for ABC News, and has made more than 30 national television appearances on ABC News Good Morning America Health segments.In addition to his memberships in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the New York Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Heart Association, Dr. Magovern is a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.
