Dr. David Sousa is a pulmonologist and intensivist with Atlantic Medical Group, specializing in critical care medicine and intensive care unit (ICU) recovery. As a lead physician with Pulmonary and Allergy Associates and medical director of the Post-ICU Care Center at Atlantic Health System, Dr. Sousa compassionately treats patients with a variety of critical illness requiring treatment in the ICU. His overarching goal is to improve the lives of his patients who are dealing with or recovering from critical illness.Fellowship-trained in pulmonary and critical care medicine, Dr. Sousa is also board-certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and pulmonary medicine. As medical director of the Post-ICU Care Center at Atlantic Health System — the first of its kind in New Jersey — he focuses on the often overlooked physical, mental, and emotional symptoms that persist for patients and their families after leaving an intensive care setting to recover from a critical illness. Uniquely positioned to lead this initiative, patients and families benefit from Dr. Sousa’s years of expertise and his humanistic approach to patient care.After earning his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Sousa perfomed his residency training and subsequent fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is involved in research activities and has received numerous awards for his excellence in teaching medical students and residents.Dr. Sousa is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.
