Overview
. Dr. Francisco Fuentes earned his medical degree from the University of València Faculty of Medicine and Odontology in València, Spain, and completed his residency with the Autonomous University of Barcelona Faculty of Medicine at the Hospital of Santa Cruz and San Pablo in Barcelona, Spain, and a fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Fuentes specializes in echocardiography, general cardiology, invasive cardiovascular medicine, noninvasive cardiology and preventive cardiology. He also speaks Spanish. Underscoring his excellence as a clinician and educator, Dr. Fuentes is the Theodore and Maureen O’Driscoll-Levy Professor and director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and Cardiology Fellowship Program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston.. He conducts one of the largest and most comprehensive courses in preventive cardiology in the United States, which has been held annually for over 20 years. Currently, he is investigating how to optimize medical and surgical therapies for patients with coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Fuentes is also a recognized health educator in the community, and routinely volunteers at the San Jose Clinic. He received the Herbert L. and Margaret W. DuPont Master Clinical Teaching Award. In addition, he was named a Texas Super Doctor by Texas Monthly and a Top Doctor for Women—Cardiology by H Texas Magazine, and was presented with a Special Congressional Recognition by Congressman Al Green in honor of outstanding dedication to health care, education and community service. He also was honored by the American Heart Association for numerous contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine and the Hispanic community. He received the Benjy F. Brooks MD Award from McGovern Medical School for outstanding clinical faculty.
