Sona Sehgal, MD, is a clinical professor of pediatrics and a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist with more than 20 years of experience caring for infants, children and adolescents with complex digestive and feeding conditions. She has extensive experience providing second opinions for international families, including many patients from the Middle East. Her clinical focus includes children with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), repaired tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), feeding disorders, intestinal failure, and children dependent on gastrostomy tube (G-tube) feeds or total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Dr. Sehgal works closely with pulmonology, otolaryngology (ENT), speech and feeding therapists, and surgery to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for complex aerodigestive conditions. She is experienced in evaluating children who are dependent on long-term nutritional support and in developing safe, individualized plans to optimize growth and feeding. Dr. Sehgal has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in pediatric gastroenterology, with research focusing on pediatric acute pancreatitis, aerodigestive disorders, intestinal failure and short bowel syndrome, and optimization of biologic therapy in inflammatory bowel disease. He completed his postdoctoral research training at USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center, Baylor College of Medicine. He joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2008. His research interests center on the understanding and treatment of chronic liver disease, ascites, cholestasis, viral hepatitis especially hepatitis C and hepatitis E, and Cystic Fibrosis Related Liver Disease. Dr. Karnsakul is also involved in NIH-funded multicenter research studies including the Cholestatic Liver Disease Consortium and Cystic Fibrosis Related Liver Disease Project.
