Dr. Chetan B. Patel
Overview
I am a researcher and heart transplant specialist who also serves as medical director for the heart transplant program at Duke. From the time I was a child, I have been fascinated by how the human body works, specifically by how blood travels around the body. I became especially interested in how the heart behaves when it is normal and how it adapts when it is damaged. As a transplant cardiologist, I get to combine these interests with cutting-edge medicine to help people to live longer and feel better, even when hearts fail. I enjoy getting to know patients and their loved ones as they go through their transplant journey at Duke. I am also fortunate to be part of an experienced team that has been together for over a decade taking care of heart transplant patients.

I am a transplant nephrologist specializing in the evaluation and care of kidney and pancreas transplant patients. I joined Duke Health in 2023 to lead the living donor kidney transplant program. Our living donor team is actively working to increase access to these life saving transplants by removing barriers to donation and through innovative use of paired donor exchange. Helping people live a longer, healthier life through transplant is my passion. I also value getting to know my patients and their loved ones, and seeing them through life's challenges and successes. What led me into medicine was a passion for taking care of patients. Kidney transplant requires a very complex team, and I enjoy the collaboration among providers and the challenge of helping the team operate more efficiently. I love seeing patients and developing relationships with them. I always try to be very open and candid about the process and plan for care. When I evaluate patients, I always try to view them as a whole person to make sure that transplant is the right choice for them. I grew up in New Mexico but have lived in North Carolina for over two decades. I now consider myself a native North Carolinian and a die-hard Duke fan.
