I wanted to be a doctor from the time I was very young, but it was when my own father had a heart attack in his 30’s that I knew I wanted to be a heart specialist. As a general cardiologist here at Duke, I care for patients with a wide range of heart issues including palpitations, abnormalities, hypertension and heart attacks. I work between two clinics, serving people from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in the community. Although I focus on many therapeutic issues within cardiology, one of my main interests is cardiac arrest, specifically regarding survival of patients who have undergone CPR in a non hospital setting. I love getting to know my patients and finding things that connect us outside of their health or diagnosis. It is a privilege, as a physician, to be allowed entry into patients’ lives to listen, to comfort and to care for them during a difficult time in their health journey. Collaborating with a genetic counselor specializing in cardiac disorders, I perform genetic testing for these conditions. In addition, I evaluate athletes with cardiac conditions, focusing on arrhythmias and abnormal electrocardiograms. I am a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist, a cardiologist who focuses on invasive and non-invasive treatments for the electrical problems of the heart, such as arrhythmias. When necessary, I can perform a wide variety of procedures for my patients, including ablation of simple and complex arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and ventricular tachycardia, and implantation of pacemakers, defibrillators, and left atrial appendage occlusion devices. I have expertise in implanting newer and complex devices, including cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, conduction system pacemakers, leadless pacemakers, and subcutaneous defibrillators.
