As a hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon, my expertise is in the surgical care of people who have cancer or benign disease of the pancreas, gallbladder, liver, and ampulla. However, my main area of expertise is pancreatic cancer.I chose to specialize in pancreatic cancer for a variety of reasons. It is a complex and aggressive disease that requires surgical and medical management based on innovative research. In addition, providing surgical treatment for pancreatic cancer demands great technical skills, and effective treatment requires a team of experts with access to the most sophisticated technology available. At Perlmutter Cancer Center, we perform more than 100 Whipple procedures—a complex surgery for cancer in the head of the pancreas—each year with outstanding outcomes. The mortality rate of Whipple procedures at our center is among the lowest in the world. I have performed more than 1,200 of these procedures. Our team has expertise in robotic surgery of the pancreas and liver, as well as in the removal of pancreatic tumors that involve major vessels, which is also known as locally advanced pancreatic cancer. We use transplants to manage certain types of liver tumors and offer precision treatment for all stages of pancreatic cancer. Our patients have access to the most advanced clinical trials.I feel privileged to share in the lives of people who have received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and shepherd them through treatment. One of the most rewarding parts of. Dr. Wolfgang is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Pancreatoblastoma. His top areas of expertise are Pancreatic Cancer, Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumor, Pancreaticoduodenectomy, and Pancreatectomy.

Philosophy of care | As a surgical oncologist, I’m passionate about beating cancer. We hope to eradicate it and do everything possible to maximize the patient’s quality of life. I talk to patients in a language they can understand. When I make a treatment recommendation, I put myself in their shoes and tell them what I would do if I were faced with these options. | Why I entered medicine | I think I was born to be a doctor. My father was a doctor, and I was fascinated with anatomy as a child. I had anatomy models and would constantly play with them. During my first surgical rotation in medical school, I was hooked. Surgery is anatomy. The intensity, teamwork and ability to fix problems in the operating room is what drives me. | Community involvement | I find it deeply gratifying to support organizations that inspire me. I’m a long-time donor to Semper Fi, a group that gives financial assistance and support to post-9/11 injured veterans and their families. I feel strongly about supporting our military service members who sacrifice so much to protect us. I’m also an enthusiastic backer of Yellowstone National Park. I went there as a kid and later took my own kids when they were young. I’ve always been in awe of Yellowstone’s majesty and beauty. | Personal interests | I enjoy spending time with my girls (my wife and three daughters) and my boys (my two dogs). I stay physically fit by running and working out at home. I enjoy landscaping and reading the classics, and I’m an avid Philadelphia sports fan.
