Overview
I came to the area to start the nuclear cardiology program and also to do interventional work and general and preventive cardiology. My mom was a research physician, and my dad was a cardiologist. So the dinner conversations were pretty much medically related. I think my first interest in medicine came through that, going to the lab with my mom and on rounds with my dad. I said, wow, this is something I could do and would really like to do. I like to talk to people and listen to their story, see how they are doing, see if the things we have talked about are working for them, or whether there are other ways we can get them better. I like seeing them do better over time, seeing improvements in their cholesterol, blood pressure, exercise, things like that.

I am a cardiologist trained and experienced in preventive cardiology. I have served as the medical director of the Duke Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (formerly DUPAC) since 1994. I specialize in the prevention and treatment of heart disease risk factors before and after cardiac disease develops. I direct a program that uses the principles of balancing energy intake and expenditure to treat heart disease and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes. I also have an active practice for assessment and advice for the older athlete who wants to improve performance – whether he or she has heart disease or not.
