
Overview
Bahaa Malaeb, MD, FACS, joined the University of Michigan, Department of Urology in August 2012 after completing a fellowship in Genitourinary Trauma and Reconstructive Urology at the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to that, he finished his residency in urology (2011) and a research fellowship in urologic oncology (2006) at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, Dr. Malaeb completed his undergrad at the American University of Beirut (1999) and obtained his MD from the same institution (2003).Dr. Malaeb's clinical focus and practice include evaluating and managing genitourinary trauma in the immediate and the delayed setting. His reconstructive practice spans both upper and lower urinary tracts. The typical surgeries he performs include urethroplasties for stricture disease, penile reconstruction, prosthetic surgery for Peyronie's disease, erectile dysfunction, and surgeries for management of male incontinence. He manages urologic trauma in the acute setting as well as delayed presentation. Dr. Malaeb also is involved in the gender program and collaborates with plastic surgery and GYN in gender reassignment procedures. His research interests mirror his clinical practice and involve urinary incontinence in men, trends and outcomes, urologic prosthetics, and urethral stricture disease.Dr. Malaeb is very excited to be part of the University of Michigan, Department of Urology, as he gets the opportunity to work at one of the nation's leading programs. The opportunities for research and collaboration are unmatched, and the patient population is diverse and challenging. He enjoys working with the residents and is committed to teaching in a clinic and operating room setting. On a personal level, he is getting to enjoy the fantastic setting of a beautiful college town with easy access to a vast range of activities, from fine dining and a great art scene to fun outdoor activities.

After graduating from the University of Leeds, Dr. Ghani completed basic surgical training in Edinburgh followed by urological surgery training in London. He was awarded a Master of Surgery thesis from the University of London for research on percutaneous renal stone surgery. Following completion of sub-specialist training in Endourology at the Stone Unit at Guy’s Hospital, London, Dr. Ghani was awarded The Urology Foundation Scholarship and undertook fellowship training in robotic surgery at the Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit.He joined the University of Michigan in 2013 and leads the Endourology program at the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System. He treats patients with kidney problems: stones, cancer and obstruction. Dr Ghani has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, and his research focuses on endoscopic stone surgery and quality improvement. Specifically, he has been advancing a Dusting technique for ureteroscopy and has extramural funding to study laser lithotripsy in the laboratory. He is the Course Director of the annual Developments in Ureteroscopic Stone Treatment (D.U.S.T.) symposium, an international meeting that has exposed hundreds of urologists to advanced ureteroscopy techniques. He is also the Course Director of the American Urological Association annual course, Dust or Bust.In addition, Dr Ghani serves as the Director of the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC), which is a consortium of 46 urology practices aiming to improve the quality of care for patients with prostate cancer, kidney stones, and kidney cancer. Within MUSIC, he is the principal investigator of two randomized clinical trials assessing patient health-related quality of life and healthcare use after ureteroscopy. Dr. Ghani has received numerous prizes for his presentations and research from the American Urological Association, Endourological Society, European Association of Urology, and has lectured and taught surgeons throughout the world. He is an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Urology and serves on the editorial board of Nature Reviews Urology. Dr. Ghani is highly rated in 31 conditions, according to our data. Dr. Dauw received his medical degree from Loyola University in Chicago graduating Magna Cum Laude. He then completed a urology residency at The University of Michigan. Following this, he pursued subspecialty training in endourology with Dr. James Lingeman at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. His primary clinical interests include the medical and surgical management of kidney stones, in particular, endourological management of complex renal calculi. He is also one of few U.S. providers with expertise in holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical treatment for men with an enlarged prostate. His research interests focus on improving the quality of care for patients with kidney stones as well as understanding outcomes associated with commonly performed endourological surgeries. Dr. Montgomery's research focuses on improving the quality and efficiency of urologic oncology disease management. Dr. Montgomery is a Michigan native and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. He then went on to complete his medical education at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York before finishing his Urology residency at the University of Michigan.
