
Overview
Brent B. Ward, DDS, MD, is the Chalmers J. Lyons Endowed Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Hospital Dentistry within the School of Dentistry, and Professor in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ward is a graduate of Brigham Young University and the University of Southern California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry. He received his medical degree and completed his postgraduate training, including residency and fellowship, at the University of Michigan, joining the faculty in 2003. He is the Associate Program Director of the Oral/Head & Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship within the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Ward has been recognized as a professional leader by numerous organizations. He is a past president and the current Executive Director of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons. He has held multiple leadership positions in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), including Chair of the Committee on Education and Training, the Committee on Oral, Head and Neck Oncology & Reconstructive Surgery, and the Special Committee on Student Recruitment and Residency Program Strategies. He currently chairs the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation Research Committee and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Ward is the recipient of the 2025 Presidential Achievement Award from AAOMS. Throughout his career, Dr. Ward has actively blended his clinical expertise with research supported by entities including the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the OMS Foundation, and the Osteo Science Foundation, in the areas of cancer, reconstruction, and pain control. He specializes clinically in cancer and precancerous conditions, as well as major pathology and reconstruction of the structures of the face, mouth, and jaws resulting from cancer, trauma, or congenital defects.
